So worried about my friend's baby :(

Two days ago my friend's 9 month old baby girl was rushed in an ambulance from the ER to the Children's ICU.

My friend noticed some bruising on her legs first, then after the nap she had a rash on her arm and was after that bruising even if you touched her.

When they took her in her platelets were at 20k, where the normal range should be at at least 140k. First they thought it was leukemia but thank goodness it is NOT.

She was diagnosed with ITP, a blood disorder that causes your antibodies to attack the platelets. In any case, she is still at the hospital and they have to run blood tests every few hours. This sort of a thing can happen if the baby has had a bad or a serious of infections. This baby girl has had (in the past two months) a sinus and and ear infection and a constant cold... She is still wearing a little helmet to prevent even a slightest bump.

I feel so sad. Just sharing it with you and asking for some positive vibes for this little one.

Thanks so much!!

  • Poor thing! I'm so sorry. Is it something she will recover from or will she continue to have the condition in some form?

  • How scary. From what I know, it's a disease that can resolve on it's own often, I hope that is the case for your friends baby. I was born without platelets and had to have a blood transfusion. I often thing about how frightening that must have been for my parents. I hope they hear good news:)

  • Thank you all!

We did hear good news, she was able to go home.:) She's still not out of the woods and has to go back to recheck her platelets levels. There is still a long road ahead of them but at least she's back home and recovering.

And I'm not sure if this will be something they'll have to keep an eye on from now on or if it was a one time scary thing.
