I prefer Charlotte. I think Charlene sounds dated because it's not classic. It was trendy and now it's time is over. Charlotte may be popular now but it's always a classic.

My name is Charlene, and I HATED it growing up! People always spell it wrong ie. Sharlene, Charleen. I am okay with it now, but always wished my mom had chosen something else.
I picture Charlene wearing boots, a string tie around her neck, and a 10 gallon hat.YeeHAW, Charlene!nbsp;
This. My daughter's Godmother calls her Charlene, as a joke. Uses a heavy country accent, lol.
If you don't want to use Charlotte, how about Collette? It was another name we considered.
FWIW, we are constantly receiving compliments in our LO's name, hearing how refreshing it is, etc. It's definitely growing in popularity but apparently it's not that wide spread where we live. If you follow naming trends, then you obviously hear it a lot, but we haven't met another baby Charlotte yet.

Not horrible, but it does sound a bit dated. Charlotte is prettier sounding, but oh so over-popular right now.
How about Carla? It still has an old school vibe but not so honky-tonk sounding.
And thank you for not mentioning that you'd use the nickname CHARLIE!
Charlene is okay, but agree with this.
