ob telling me i HAVE to have colposcopy done

Im currently 11 weeks and i had my first ever abnormal pap and im 22yrs old.... Ive had a tubal pregnancy and two miscarraiges before. Ive heard there could be complications from colposcopies and i dont want to rick it but my obs nurse practicioner said they HAD to do it and i dont really have a choice and i wont even feel it... Can she really tell me they HAVE to do it and i dont really have a choice? Whats a colposcopy like?

Re: ob telling me i HAVE to have colposcopy done

  • My obgyn told me not to have this done when I was pregnant. My pap smear was only minimally abnormal, so I think it depends on what it says. When I did have the procedure, it was really not that bad. It was like a prolonged pap smear. I did not have any pain medication other than motrin

  • Lurking from another board... I'd get a second opinion or at least a second Pap smear. Colonoscopies are no fun. I had one a year ago, and I hope I don't have to get another one till I'm 50! Definitely wouldn't want one during pregnancy.

  • I agree with pp. I'd get a second opinion, especially if this is something you are uncomfortable with. I had colposcopy in my early 20s. While it's not particularly painful, it is a medical procedure that I wouldn't do unless it was absolutely necessary as it does carry some risk (as does everything). Perhaps others can elaborate more on this, but when I interviewed an ob for this pregnancy she mentioned that the newest research advises against doing this procedure in women in their early 20s. She said research showed that often times to problem subsides without intervention at significant rates in this population of women. I don't know the ins and outs of this particular study or your circumstance, but I think it's great you're asking questions and being your own health advocate. Good luck!

  • I had one a few weeks ago. I asked my Dr a lot of questions before hand, I asked him, if he is going to take a closer look, or if he is doing a biopsy as well.  Mine just took a look, but he did not take look in the cervix as it's not recommended during pregnancy. I have to do a repeat pap in a few months to see if there is any changes.
