brown discharge with elastic like strings:

Hello All:

Sorry in advance for TMI. But I was hoping someone could give me some advise?

I am 8.5 weeks and this morning when i wipe I have a brown stringy elastic like discharge - just a little bit, and when i go back to the loo and hour later there's a little more??

Has anyone had anything similar? Is this something to be worried about???

I called the doctor, who basically said there is nothing we can really do. If I wanted to I could go and get a blood test. My next appointment is next week (the 22nd of February) I had my first ultrasound last week monday and got to hear the heartbeat a strong 153...I am just worried it is my first time preggo and was looking for a little advise... all is appreciated.

  • Hello! I would not stress it! I've had that for over 2 weeks. Dr. sent me for 3 u.s and every time baby was doing great! :) Call your Dr. immediately if it becomes bright red and heavy. That could mean you are having a m.c. I wouldn't worry about that though. My Dr. also said there is only a 5% chance of m.c once you see the heartbeat!

  • I'm having a tiny bit of discharge like that too. I checked internally (as if I were checking CM during TTC), and there wasn't really any brown. I called the doctor though, just to be sure and she said it's not a problem, normal, and I only need to worry if it picks up or has cramping. Which is what I've read everywhere anyway, but I called just to be sure. Obviously for peace of mind seeing nothing would be better, but I'm just trying to relax and listen to the doctor. Easier said than done though! I also had my first us last week and everything checked out ok. I don't know what the baby's heartbeat was (forgot to ask), but I think if something were wrong they would have told me to come back next week instead of in the usual 4 weeks. Good luck that yours it's nothing!

  • Yes, I have had spotting for nearly three weeks now and recently have had more stringy looking discharge once or twice. I went in at 7 1/2 wks for a u/s due to spotting and was told everything looked good - measuring on time and 150 heartbeat. They haven't determined any cause for this yet, but as it hasn't ever progressed to red flow with cramping, my dr doesn't seem concerned. He said all my numbers etc look good but I am going in for a 10 wk ultrasound since the spotting is still consistent. I would keep your doctor informed, but try not to worry too much. Since I've been on the pregnancy boards the most common posts seem to be about spotting and discharge... Good luck to you!

  • I'm almost 9 weeks and wasn't spotting for over a week, but just this morning I had the same brown stringy discharge. It's always a little alarming, but completely normal. It has gone away since this morning. It always happens a few days after I have some period-like cramps.

  • I've had it twice. One pregnancy I lost, and my last pregnancy, which survived. It sucks, but you'll have to either wait it out or request an ultrasound. If your dr is hesitant to order an ultrasound, find out if it will be covered by your insurance. If it will be, they have no reason to say no.

  • I just had that today too. Fortunately I was diagnosed with a benign cervical polyp yesterday  that can cause minor bleeding.  I think mine was from the extensive pelvic exam yesterday followed by the internal vagina US to search for the cause of my severe lower right abdominal pain.  Too much activity for my already sensitive cervix and sensitive polyp. Call your doc if this is a change from normal though.  Good luck!
