LO was on a milk based formula for several months, after a bout with a bacterial infection the pedi put her on a soy based formula. She had generally had pretty runny stools on the milk based formula and did well on the soy so we kept her on it. The pedi wasn't sold that it was a dairy issue though. Last night we gave her a little bit of cheese. Today she has a little rash on one cheek, but also has some yellow stringy loose poop. I was researching symptoms of an intolerance online. Anyone experienced a dairy intolerance with your LO?

Re: Dairy intolerance?
Watch for anything that has "casein" - that's the milk protein name. Lots of foods/products that have soy also have casein.
Blood in the stool is usually an allergy and yes that also means their digestive tracts can't tolerate it. My daughter had blood in her stool at 8 weeks, was put on a hypoallergenic formula, allergy tested at 8 mos, low and behold she's allergic to milk. So keep an eye on the poops. The rash on the face also leads me to think allergy. If milk touches my daughters skin it will get red and sometimes hives. It sounds like soy is working out for her so I wouldn't worry about that as much but probably stay away from dairy products at least til you see your doc again and talk to him/her about what's going on.

We eventually figured out through trial and error with formula and our amazing pedi that my son seems to be bothered by casein but not so much by whey. My family has many issues with allergies so we weren't eager to try soy. We're using a casein free formula with probiotics and while it's a little expensive, it's less than some of the other sensitive formula options and we don't have to worry about a soy allergy.
Our baby had endless screaming, constant gas with loud farts every minute or two, terrible bloating to the point his belly was hard and distended, was difficult to feed, slept poorly and was constipated and then would have terrible sticky poo. It was complicated by the fact that the hospital really wanted to keep him on preemie formula to get his weight up but it was hurting him!
I guess I shouldn't be surprised. I have to drink whey protein shakes and they don't bother me a bit, but milk and dairy do. I'm not saying that's the issue with your baby, but it took us a while to figure out so I thought it might help someone
