Toy organization

Talk to me about organizing your LO's toys.

We have 4 toy boxes that are all full. I was putting toys with different pieces into ziplock bags to keep them together, puzzle pieces, cups for her teapot, outfits for her dolls, etc. It has really helped making sure we don't lose things.

The other night DH noticed her playing with a big bag and was worried shed put it over her head so he took everything out of the bags. Already today we were doing puzzles and missing pieces that fell to the bottom of the toy box.

So how do you keep pieces of toys together?

Re: Toy organization

  • I use Sterilite plastic shoeboxes from Walmart for less than $1.  They're easy to open and close and easy to stack.  Also for smaller things, I buy plastic pencil boxes (school supply type) at the dollar store.

  • We use ziplock bags too and everything goes into the toy box which is ajumble.  I was at a friend's house for a playdate, and she had some nifty organizers from Ikea, with slide out trays/bins.  If I can find another home in the house for the toy box, I'm going to look into getting some of those.  The small pieces parts can go right into the small trays.

  • We had a toy box, but just a few weekends ago I felt like there was so many toys that DD wasn't playing with because they were at the bottom of the box. So I went to Wal-Mart and bought a $15 bookshelf and some canvas bins and organized our toy closet in the family room. This has worked 100x better then the toy box. I was also able to put away the toys she no longer needed to play with.

BTW - DDs puzzle pieces are also in ziploc bags as well as her crayons. I just always keep an eye on her when she has those out.

  • I use canvas bins as well and fit nicely on a self. I'm loving the small storage box idea though....I just purchase the "economy sized" toy box (6 cubic ft) yes...ridiculous but the bins help too.
  • Baskets on shelves. Things are organized into different baskets.

The puzzles are stacked in one basket. They also have puzzle organizers.

  • I have a bunch of plastic containers with lids for different sets of toys.   I also have some open baskets for things like cars, trucks, etc.

As for puzzles, I have a bigger basket that they can stack in.
