Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Feeding amount

My son is almost 6 weeks. He was born almost 10lbs so he is a big boy with a big appetite. They told me in the hospital he would eat more than a baby 7-8 lbs. he was eating 4oz every 3-4 hours. Latley he full eat 4oz then an hour later scream for more. Is it ok if I try 6oz every 4-5 hours now or does this sound like too much for a baby this age. My daughter wasn't like this.

Re: Feeding amount

  • I don't think so. I know my son is 6 weeks old and only eats 3-4 oz's, but my DD was eating 4-6 oz around this time.

  • Honestly, I would feed him on demand.  That is what I was told and tried to focus on.  My son is 10 weeks today and he eats 5oz almost every two hours except at night.  He will go 4 or so hours...sometimes 3...lucky me.  If he is gaining weight properly, you are feeding him what he needs.  My son was 8lb 5oz when born and at two weeks he was 9lb 12oz.  At 2 months he was 14lbs even and I was told he was perfect.  I say feed on demand especially if you are BF.   It is amazing for them.  GL!

  • My DS was also born close to 10 lbs and is a big eater. He is now drinking 5-6 ounces every 2.5-3 hours.

Yes it's OK to increase the amount he eats if he wants it. Feed until he's not hungry (until he turns away from the bottle or stops taking the nipple in his mouth). Use his own cues and signals.
