Hungarian Names

I've searched a lot for names from my culture, but I haven't found many that I like. What are your favorites?

I like:

Mariska (Mah-reesh-kuh [form of Mary])

Izabella (Isabella in Hungarian would be Eesh-a-beh-la, no s!) *This is still pronounced like Isabella. I'm just saying that if it were spelled with an S it would be pronounced like the previously said.*

Rozalia (Rose-ah-leah [form of Rose]) *the leah is fast, like you're pronouncing Talia like "tall-ya"

Zsazsa/Zsa Zsa (the ZS is pronounced like the 'G' in beige [form of Susan/Susanna])

Juliska (Joo-leesh-kuh)

Klara [form of Clara/Claire]

Krisztina [form of Christina]

Rozsa (like ro-sha {see Zsa Zsa} [form of Rose])

*I like Erzsebet, but it is my middle name.

Re: Hungarian Names

  • Mariska (Mah-reesh-kuh [form of Mary]) - Love.

Izabella (Isabella in Hungarian would be Eesh-a-beh-la, no s!) - Okay, but Isabella is pretty common right now.

Rozalia (Rose-ah-leah [form of Rose]) - Okay.

Zsazsa/Zsa Zsa (the ZS is pronounced like the 'G' in beige [form of Susan/Susanna]) - Dislike. Sorry, I feel like this will be butchered unless you live in Hungaria.

Juliska (Joo-leesh-kuh) - I love this name, I find it to be really pretty and feminine.

Klara [form of Clara/Claire] - Love!

Krisztina [form of Christina] - It's okay.

Rozsa (like ro-sha {see Zsa Zsa} [form of Rose]) - I like this, a lot, actually. But unless you live in Hungaria, I feel like it will be mispronounced constantly.

  • I love Mariska, but always thought it was pronounced more like ma-RISH-kuh.  I also love Juliska.  Rozalia is nice, the rest are lovely but nms with the exception of Zsazsa.  That one is ugly, IMO.

I agree with all of this. Zsazsa doesn't work unless you're planningon moving to Hungary.

  • Before I say anything about the names in particular, as long as you are okay with some folks having a hard time pronouncing the names, any of your choices are fine. I have a name that is pronounced somewhat differently than what others would think and I've constantly grown up correcting others. That said, it doesn't really bother me. Many people say to steer clear of difficult to say or spell names but honestly, don't let that scare you if you are okay with knowing you may have to get a little 'hooked on phonics' with people.

Mariska (Mah-reesh-kuh [form of Mary]) - my favorite of the list

Izabella (Isabella in Hungarian would be Eesh-a-beh-la, no s!) - I get the different pronouncing but I'm not crazy about it especially with Isabella being so overworked right now.

Rozalia (Rose-ah-leah [form of Rose]) *the leah is fast, like you're pronouncing Talia like "tall-ya" - I really like this one too.

Zsazsa/Zsa Zsa (the ZS is pronounced like the 'G' in beige [form of Susan/Susanna]) - Not crazy about this. What about Zosia?

Juliska (Joo-leesh-kuh) Pretty but not as good as Mariska or Rozalia

Klara [form of Clara/Claire]- love this name too

Krisztina [form of Christina] - Not crazy about the spelling

Rozsa (like ro-sha {see Zsa Zsa} [form of Rose]) I see Rosacea... so.. no...

  • I think some of these would be really difficult to pronounce if you aren't in Hungary. I think it is great to use a name from your culture, but I would choose one that wouldn't be an issue for LO no matter where she lives.

So, I really like Mariska and Klara.

Some of the others would be a bit of a mouthful (unless in Hungary), especially Zsazsa.

Zsazsa/Zsa Zsa (the ZS is pronounced like the 'G' in beige [form of Susan/Susanna]) - Not crazy about this. What about Zosia?

How do you pronounce Zosia? It looks like a beautiful name.

  • I adore Rozalia, new favorite name!

    Mariska is lovely.

Izabella, Krisztina and Klara are more mainstream and lack that special something.

The rest are quite lovely as well, but I am with the majority in not being a fan of Zsa Zsa, that was just makes me think of Zsa Zsa Gabor.

  • DH is Hungarian.  I like a lot of the names.  My favorites for girls are:

    Ilona

    Csilla

Both were on my list if this LO was to be a girl.  I was afraid that no one would be able to pronounce Csilla though.  Still in love with Ilona.  Good luck.

  • Agree with PP that Zsazsa is a no go. The only Hungarian women I know is called Emmeshe (that's how you say it, no idea how you spell it) and I love that.

  • Most of these are nice but would probably cause spelling and pronunciation issues.

    I like Klara and Mariska.

I like Zsa Zsa in theory but it really sounds like a glam NN. The only person I can see pulling it off is Zsa Zsa Gabor.
