Babies: 0 - 3 Months

DD will NOT go back to sleep after 2 pm feeding...

I'm about to lose my mind. DD wakes pretty regularly at night: 10:30 (right before I go to bed-perfect!), 2:00, 6:00, and 8:30. And I'm perfectly fine with that schedule, EXCEPT that she stays awake from 2:00 to 4 or 4:30 every night. I rock her, shush her, offer her more food, burp, change (last night we even changed her clothes just to make sure she was comfortable), but she will not go back to sleep. She's just wide awake. I know it's hard to get a baby to do anything she doesn't want to do, but does anyone have some suggestions? DH and I are going to have breakdowns if we don't get some sleep...I can barely keep my eyes open right now.

  • Unfortunately the best I can offer is to give it another 3-4 weeks.  DS's sleep patterns really got day/night 100% straight around his 6 week growth spurt.  Good luck!

  • Where do you put her down to sleep? ?Our DD sleeps in a baby papasan chair that has a vibrate/music setting that helps get her back to sleep if she's having stubborn awake time. ?Our PNP also has a vibrate/music setting (but we've never used it since she sleeps in the papasan). ?So if that's an option for you, maybe try that? ?With #1 we often had the same problem of being wide awake in the middle of the night - with her walking with her in a cradle hold while singing to her softly often did the trick. ?Also, if she's finished eating, I've found with both girls that DH often has more luck getting her back to sleep than I do. ?Something about not even having that nursing option, I guess. ?Good luck, the newborn sleep deprivation is the worst!
  • Take her to bed with you..even if you don't want to co-sleep all the time, co-sleeping for that stretch may be your lifesaver. Worked wonders for us, and DD started STTN in her own crib at 2 months.

  • We put DD to sleep for the night at 10:30-11:00pm.  (So, from 8-11 pm we play with her, give her a bath, etc.)  She sleeps until 4:00, eats, then goes right back to sleep until 7:00am.  She is pretty wide awake at 7:00, then goes back to sleep by 8:30am (until about 10:00am.) I don't know if this is weird to put a baby to sleep so late at night, but it works for us and we aren't messing with success.  She's so incredibly active from 8-11 pm that we probably couldn't get her to sleep much earlier anyways.

So, I don't know, but maybe if you move forward your DD's bedtime a bit, her two hour awake time might come at a more managable time for you.  2-4am is the worst time possible she could be awake, IMO!   I'll bet you are sooo sleepy.  Hope it gets better soon!

  • DS went through it as well.  It goes get better.  Just give it a few more weeks.
