Cloth Diapering

I hope I'm not ruining my CDs.....

To maximize time, water and efficiency, I wash the regular pocket/AIO CDs (no hemp or other "special" material) in cold water with other baby clothes but continue to use CD safe detergent. Then, I just line dry the CDs and throw the rest of the clothes into the dryer.

Am I setting up my CDs to fail?

  • Do you rinse/prewash the diapers first? Otherwise you're just washing all of the clothes and diapers in nasty pee water.

Honestly, I would be concerned that washing my diapers in anything but hot water wouldn't get them clean enough. Or that your diapers weren't in enough water to properly rinse clean afterwards, since you're washing a whole load of baby clothes also.

Simply washing with baby clothes won't ruin the diapers though, but the rest of your routine would make me uneasy if I was doing it myself.

  • As long as you do an initial pre-wash with just the diapers and add the clothes into a traditional CD wash cycle you will be fine. Sometimes when I have small loads I add sheets or towels, but I still wash on hot.

I just rinse once, but with the rest of the clothes, not separately.

Okay, good to know. I've always washed my clothes on cold so that I can throw a variety of colors in there. I'm ultra paranoid about colors bleeding. If the clothes/diapers have been washed enough, they'd likely not bleed on warm/hot?

  • I do a pre-soak on cold with my diapers, then throw in underwear, socks, towels, sheets, etc. and wash all that in hot water. I do an extra rinse on all my clothes, so that's already set up every time. The only thing I'd worry about is not washing the diapers on hot. FWIW, I wash my hemp and bamboo in this same load also. I only have 1 diaper per day to wash, so I'm constantly trying to find things that I'm comfortable washing in hot to add to my load. (I wash every 3 days, so 3 diapers per load.)

  • I don't wash my cds w other clothes because I'm just finicky like that, but I only have cold water to my washer so unless they need to be stripped they are washed in cold.  I do prerinse and give them an extra rinse though.
