XP: Too Many Follies?

Hi ladies, I was hoping to hear about some of your experiences with IUI. Last month we tried Femara adn we thought there was a mature follie, but after I did the trigger the RE office called and said they made a mistake and it was a cyst, not a follie and all the follies were less than 9mm. This month we are trying Femara + Injectables and still no follies over 7mm on cd10. On top of that, there were over 18 on the right side. They have not told me how they will move forward, but she was thinking they might put me on more injectables. Has anyone here had so many follies and continued with injects? I'm curious to see if any pulled away from the pack and grew to 15-20? Thanks in advance!

Re: XP: Too Many Follies?

  • Well, I never had a problem with too many follies, but could this problem be fixed by letting you O on your own and not triggering?

It was not standard practice at my RE's office to "trigger" a woman when just doing Clomid/IUI or Femara/IUI.

IF DX: DOR & Fragile X pre-mutation carrier
    2011: FSH 13.3 & E 99; AMH 0.54 2nd FSH 6.2 E 40's AFC: 8
BFP from Clomid/IUI ~ Pre-e and IUGR during pregnancy ~ DS born 9/4/12
    Feb./March 2013: AMH less than 0.16 (undectable) and AFC = 4;
BFP from supps ~ DS#2 due May 2014

  • I too never had a problem with too many follies, sort of the opposite, but what dose of Femara are you on and could you up that before upping the injectables or moving on to just injectables?

My hybrid cycle of Femara and Follistim was a very high dose of Femara (I think 12.5 per day) for five days and then I think I did three days of 150 of Follistim.  That got me two mature follies and two lagging behind.

What a fine line we walk between wanting enough follies but not wanting too many.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • When they said you had 18 follies... were those actually developing? That could be your natural antral follicle count and the meds didn't do anything for you at all. I started out my cycles getting only 1-2 follies then my body just started responding well and I'd get 4-5 follies. At that point I'd had so many failed cycles they let me continue without canceling and still gave me relatively low chances of success. A lot of docs like injects because they have so much more control over them.
  • What is your IF diagnosis?  Sounds like PCOS (poly cystic ovarian syndrom) to me.  In which case it would be very normal to have tons of little cysts on your ovaries, and only so many follicles would grow.  I did Femara and ovidrel with IUI, and I had about 3 follicles ranging from 15-20 mm each time.
TTC with PCOS since November 2009
    IUI#1 Femara/Ovidrel (cd 3-7) = BFP, m/c
    IUI#2 Femara/Ovidrel (cd 5-9) = BFN
    IUI#3 Femara/Ovidrel (cd 3-7) = BFP!
    beta #1 11/23 = 270, P4 = 75
    beta #2 11/28 = 2055

  • I can't get my siggy to work :(

I do not have a diagnosis at this point.  My husband has MFI due to chemo so we are doing the IUI w/DS.  I have Rheumatoid Arthritus, so that could also cause some issues but I don't think it should cause multiple follies.

The RE office called me back and they are putting me on a double dose of injectables for the next 3 days to see what happens then back in for another u/s.  Hopefully we will see some growth.  :)  Thanks all for your help!!
