September 2012 Moms

:::LOISLANE:::

Hey lady!
Happy birthday and stuff.
Wanna talk weaning?
[Any other ladies weaning chime in]
I'm there too, since hitting the gym amongst other things my supply is the worst.
How are you going about it?
I feel like I have no idea where to start.

I have started giving a couple ounces after BFing before bed. He's sleeping better.

For you LL and the LURKERS and kind of for me too.

  • Awesome.
Are you giving LO BM only? Or have you started formula?
I'm still not sure if I want to start all at once or cut a feeding at a time with supplementing after the feeding? Ugh, make sense? I'm bouncing my kid and typing is hard.

Oh also, would it be possible to wean from all feedings except over night? He still eats once or twice over night and it takes a lot longer to feed him a bottle then nurse so I would hate to have to give him bottles over night.

I think if you start by cutting one feeding out and then another and another you can still have overnight BFing.

We do half and half so that I can use BM for longer. We'll start cutting into the freezer stash soon and just mix 3oz of pumped BM with 3 oz formula for bottles.

    Thanks lady.
    I'm slowly taking the plunge.

    Good luck with the tits!!

  • My supply has tanked too, so I've started supplementing with formula.  I noticed that he's not nursing as well and was fussy afterward.  I made a bottle of half formula and half bm and he gulped it right down.  I've been pumping less and less (volume), so sometimes the bottle is mostly formula.  My pedi recommended starting with a "gentle" formula, so we're using Gerber Gentle for now.  I may try the Target "gentle" next.  Anyway, he's doing great with it.  I can't decide if I should just quite pumping and go straight to formula.

As for weaning, I quit cold turkey with DS1 and while it was painful, it was only for about 2 days.  I wore a tight sports bra and put frozen veggies over it when they were really sore.

Thanks for posting this. I want to wean sometime in the next few months, just not quite sure when and how I want to stop. Lo has a cold now so I'm definitely waiting until he's better. I also have 2 and half months left of the mini pill so I will need to call and get on the regular pill when I start weaning. Does anyone know if its safe for the regular pill to be excreted in breast milk, I can't remember if the problem with it is that it affects milk production or if its also unsafe for baby too? Have you completely stopped all nursing sessions then? Did you slowly phase them out or just one day stopped them and only offered bottles?

The definite problem with regular BCP and BFing is it messes with your supply. That would only help you if you are trying to wean anyway. There is a concern that the small amount of estrogen that passes to your LO could have long-term effects, but none have been found yet.

If you are already cutting back the amount of BM your LO is getting, I'd think the small amount of estrogen over a small amount of time wouldn't be a big risk issue. I'm not at all a doctor, but those are my 27 cents.

  • LOIS,

    How did it go yesterday?!
    Engorgent any better? Hope so.

Have you noticed a difference in the way the babe sleeps?

H drank a bottle of formula before bed last night and for the first time in two months, only woke up once.
I feel so weird this morning.

I was just coming to ask you! I pumped for 5 minutes last night and got 4 ounces. Slept ok, woke up with a painful spot from engorgement/clogged duct but I definitely feel less full. Nora definitely sleeps more soundly I think. She'll house 7-8 ounces easily if we let her, so I figure if that's what she wants before bed, she can have at it.

    All good news!!
I'm amazed at how much more satisfied my kid is after feedings that include formula.
    It's a whole new baby.
