Starting birth control again?

Hi girls!

On Wednesday I had my postpartum appointment at 4weeks 5 days. I started a progesterone only birth control pills that day. Starting the next morning, I started bleeding again enough to wear a pad and my milk production has really declined. Before the pills, I hadn't bled in a week and had crazy milk production. Did that happen to anyone else or should I call my ob?

Re: Starting birth control again?

  • I haven't taken bcp pp but my bleeding stopped at two weeks or so and then reappeared a few weeks later. Also, you're at the point when your milk should be regulating, so a decrease may be part of that. It's possible the bcp are affecting you too, but I wanted to put that info out there.

  • I had spotting almost six and a half weeks. I have a script for the mini pill but am not in a hurry to fill it, LOL. I did use the mini pill after my first pregnancy and BF'd DS for almost 18 months. AF returned 15 months pp. if you are concerned, do call your OB but don't stop taking it until you speak with the OB or nurse.

  • Its interesting that you posted this. I just called my doctor about it today. My pp bleeding went away around 2 weeks. Much to my husbands dismay though, it started back up the day of my 6 week appt. I mentioned it to her then but she said it was probably because I was out and about and starting to do more things. Well the spotting continued and eventually started to become a consistent flow similar to a period. At the same time I started the mini pill.

So now I have no idea if the bleeding is my period (which would be odd because I'm BF and the fact that it has lasted almost 10 days now), pp bleeding, or bleeding from the mini pill. My doctor wasn't concerned and said the bleeding wasn't concerning and within the normal range but I should call her if it got worse or continued longer. Though she said it was unlikely it was pp bleeding still and probably had something to do with the pill. However, I started bleeding before I took them so...I dunno I am just sooo ready to be done with bleeding as I am now 7 weeks pp. I guess my plan is to wait a few days as she didn't want to see me (yet) but wants me to check in with her in a few days.

  • If you're concerned, call the OB.  Its nice to hear everything is all right.

I'm not sure if its normal or not, but I started taking the mini pill about the same time and didn't have a decrease in milk production or additional bleeding.
