Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Head Shaking

I'm starting to get concerned about my son.  At around 4 months he started shaking his head no.  He shakes it pretty quickly at many different times of the day.  At first I thought it was just a phase or something new he had learned.  But now at almost 8 he still does it multiple times in a day.

I asked the doctor about it at his 6 month appt.  she brushed it off as normal and said if it was bad enough he would have a bald spot on the back of his head where it would rub.  He sleeps on his tummy and sits up most of the day to play so I don't feel like that is valid.

Am I over reacting dr. google came up with a million different things it could be.  I'm just not sure how to approach his next doctors appointment to get more answers and be taken seriously.  I want and need to be my sons biggest advocate but I don't want to be a crazy paranoid hypochondriac either. lol I'm just not sure what to do.

Re: Head Shaking

  • My LO does the same thing. When he first started I consulted the Internet and got worried too. After a while I noticed that he did it more often when he was in a playful mood. Now he is almost nine months and still does it some but much less frequently. I think it us just a phase that lasted a long time.

  • DS does this when he is tired and needs a nap.
  • DS still does this occasionally but around the age your LO is he did it all the time! We even recorded him doing it on our phone to show the pediatrician. We were told it's totally normal and when he'd do it in his crib it was his way of self soothing. He'd do it throughout the day though, not just in his crib.

    And yesstay away from google!!!!!

  • we've been doing it for a couple weeks now, and I think he does it just because he is bored, and it makes him laugh.  Im not concerned at all about it...

  • My nephew did this and always laughed when he did it.  He even did it when he was like1 and 2!  I always said it was "Crazy Mason time" every time he did, which made him laugh more.

  • My almost 9 month old does this too.  When he was smaller he would do it when he was tired but now he does it and laughs.  I do it back to him and he will stop look at me and do it again!  I did ask the doctor about this and she also brushed it off saying it wasn't weird or anything and not to be concerned.
