I have the Baby Jogger City Mini Double (side by side) and I also have the Britax B-Ready (which is a single stroller that converts to a double-inline).
I love my City Mini Double. It handles really well and it's great for walking outdoors, parks, zoo's, amusements parks, aquariums, etc. It sucks in stores or at the mall. The aisles in most stores are very narrow and it makes it really difficult to fit a side by side strollers. In a lot of the stores in the mall I can't fit my city mini so if I"m going to a store/mall I always take my Britax - which is also a great stroller.
I love both my strollers but I like the side by side slightly better than the inline. If you are going to mostly use it for parks, outdoors then go side by side. If you mostly go on mall outings, get an inline. If you do go inline, I'd go for either the Britax, BJ City Select, or Uppababy. I'm not a fan of the Chicco or Graco doubles. I find them to be much heavier, and much more difficult to maneuver but you should definitely go into a store and test drive the different strollers to figure out which you like best.
I have both too. I really like having a lightweight, easy to open and close, tandem in my car for the store and stuff. And I like having a side by side for longer excursions.
I have a joovy ultralight and city mini, though I kinda wish I had an all terrain side by side. Love the city mini though.
I have both and love them for different reasons...I agree with pp about needing each for different reasons.
My in-line, city select, was great for baby +toddler because I could use it as a single (toddler resisted stroller), double, infant car seat could drop in, I had a glider board for my toddler for quick trips and she could stand on the back (which she thought was so fun). But it really sucked when we were at Disneyland and both needed to nap, it's almost impossible to change a diaper in the seats, and now with toddlers the one sitting in the back kicks the front.
My city mini GT is a rugged version on the city mini which I LOVE. Great for zoo, dirt walks, the park, kids are more comfortable overall and now with two toddlers if I'm using a stroller both will ride in it (only need it for longer trips). Both kids can nap easily, but It is very wide....it fits through a standard door but not a centimeter to spare! I would never take this to a department store and it is heavy taking up my entire trunk.

If you're going to be using the stroller a lot for malls or places that are indoor and limited on space I think a front to back is a must.
We decided against a side by side because it just seemed like maneuvering through a mall would be impossible. Especially any children's clothing stores that they seem to make it impossible to push a stroller through, no matter what the type.
I went with the Baby Jogger City Mini Select with a double seat. I posted a lot and read a lot on the bump while I was researching and this is the stroller most moms seemed to rave about. GL!!
I got a side by side because my primary concern is how easy the stroller is to push. We also aren't big mall goers and we don't shop in stores a ton either so fitting in small places wasn't a big deal to me. What was a big deal was how easy the stroller was to push, could I do it one handed, and how the handling was on rough terrain.
I also have found that most side by sides are only about 4-5 inches widers than many full size single strollers so it's really not a big difference. This questions depends largely on your lifestyle more than anything. I really like the Britax B-Ready if I ever decide to get a tandem.
We were 2 under 2, now 3 under 3!
