Cloth Diapers?

So we're wanting to do cloth diapers. My sister in law told me to just order some from sunbabydiapers.com but I've also heard that those aren't good cause they are cheap and that the was from Kangaroo or something is the way to go but they are so pricey. I don't really know what I'm looking for. I'm just wanting to get the right thing. And what about when to start using them? I want to be able to use disposable for a bit just because of the easy aspect. I was told cloth diapers you can't use ointment?

  • The cloth diapering forum is a great starting point.

Yeah - definitely lurk around there.  They have a useful FAQ that should answer many of your questions!

  • There are so many brands but check out Green Mountain Diapers for a cheaper way to start off with their prefolds and a few cute covers. From there you can explore may brands but it really comes down to LO shape and size and what will work for you.

The CD is a brilliant resource

  • I bought a few different brands to try out. I got all one size pocket diapers because they can be used from 8lbs35lbs and you don't need separate covers for them. I'm really interested in how the Flip brand diapers will work because you can use cloth or disposable inserts with them. Kelly's Closet has a good information page and definitely check out the CD board then other ladies mentioned.

  • I haven't CD'd yet, but this has been foremost in my mind for months now and I've done a lot of lurking, asking questions, googling, etc. Take my advice with a grain of salt.

Don't put all your eggs in one basket; meaning don't buy all one brand. Every baby is shaped differently and different diapers work better for different babies.

DD was almost 9lbs so my biggest worry was wasting money on the newborn stage, since most "one size" diapers won't fit a newborn. I decided to do a mix of 6 NB prefolds from Osocozy, 12 size small prefolds from GMD, 3 Pooters bamboo fitteds in the NB size, and 6 PUL covers for the above. I'm also getting ten AIOs/pockets in NB sizes for ease of use reasons [for DH and when we're out]. That's a total of 31 newborn stage diapers, which should be good for every other day washing. The NB AIOs/pockets I'm getting are a mix of bumGenius, Kawaii, Alva, Swaddlebees and Thirsties Duo size 1.

For the one size stage, we're getting 24 AIOs/pockets, mix of bumGenius Elementals, bumGenius 4.0s, Kawaii, Alva 4.0, Swaddlebees and Thirsties Duo size 2. And probably 3 Pooters one size fitteds for overnight with a couple wool covers, but I'm not worrying about overnight issues yet.

  • Also you just need to buy cloth diaper safe cream. I cloth diaper my DD and rarely need cream.
