Fed Up w/Constipation and DR

So, my LO has been fighting constipation since he was 2 weeks old. He is FF and has been since birth. We have gone around and around with this. We have tried everything over and over again and have made several calls to the on call nurse and DR and have been to the DR about the issue specifically and also mention it at each appointment.

We have had to use glycerin to help him multiple times.

DR refuses to change his formula, and instead put me on a 3 step plan which is giving him 3 tbs of kyro syrup a day, along with 2 ounces of apple prune juice, and 3 oz of water each day. I have followed this regimen to the "T" and he has been somewhat ok. But, tonight in a matter of 2 minutes he went from a little fussy to straining so hard that his whole body turned red and his little butt was bruising from his squeezing so hard. He strained so much while we were trying to give him the glycerin that he literally stopped breathing for a second. I was bawling my eyes out! (a minute or so later he did the deed and we got him to breathe comfortably and calm down, now poor guy is knocked out)

I don't know what to do. We have done everything except change his formula and the DR doesn't want to do that. Help?

  • I Don't ff so I really don't mean this as snarky in anyway but do you need docs permission to switch? Can't you just try a new type?

So sorry you are dealing with this either way. No fun!

  • What formula are you on?
    What have you tried?

If you are feeling like a change in formula is what will help. Change. Sometimes you just gotta go with your gut.

  • He is on Similac Advance. That is what he has been on his whole life.

Typically the say not to switch formulas unless the DR tells you its ok.

I'm going to call the nurse again on Monday and tell her that he strained so much that he turned purple and stopped breathing and if they don't switch his formula or get him in to test for milk intolerance or something than I'm just going to switch hi to similac sensitive.

  • I FF and did with DD as well. I switched to Similac Sensitive and Porter does great! I too don't mean to sound snarky but I don't think you need a drs permission to switch formulas. I never asked mine. My Ped suggested if there is a problem with one to switch then if there are bigger issues to call. I wouldn't wait till Monday go get the Sensitive tomorrow.... Just my opinion
  • Who is "they"?

You don't need a drs permission to switch formulas, it's your kid, if he's uncomfortable do what you need to do to help him. Be your kids advocate, nobody else will.

  • I give my LO enfamil. There are different stages newborn, gentlease and infant and toddler. The can describes what each stage is for. I gave her infant and she was gassy so I decided to switch to newborn and gentlease to see what worked better. Now she is back on infant and everything is good.
I don't think you need to worry about checking with your dr to switch in the brand. It's your decision. I would only ask the dr what to switch to if there was a problem since they might know what could help.
Similac advance can be tough on the baby's belly. I would try similac sensitive until they are doing better.
When was the last time you LO actually pooped?
  • L was very gassy on Similac Advance, and we switched him to the Sensitive and did great. We then tried the Target Sensitive and he is still doing great. If you feel like he would do better on Sensitive, try it. We did not ask the pedi before switching, just had a hunch that he needed the Sensitive formula.

  • I agree with the above ladies. I've never heard of having to get drs permission to change formula!

  • Definitely switch formula.  And if the doctor yells at you or makes you feel like that's not something you should have done, then FIND A NEW DOCTOR.  It's not like you;ve only given the formula a day or so.  It's been long enough, and it's not working.

  • We are on our 4th formula for this...the dr actually kept changing it until we realized he had slight anal stenosis and needed a dilator. He is still slightly constipated, but now he only needs a little prune juice. I had to prove to the dr.'s that I wasn't exaggerating before they took him in to look at him. For some reason they don't take moms seriously.
