Transition from swaddling

Little guy is 3 months old, and starting to show signs that he doesn't want to be swaddled for sleeping anymore, ie busting himself loose a couple of times a night :)  However, when I put him down unswaddled, he doesn't sleep for very long.  Any suggestions to make the transition smoother?

Re: Transition from swaddling

  • If he's not sleeping well without it he's probably not ready.  You could always try something like the Woombie which is impossible to bust out of.  DD slept in that until she was 6 months.

The other option is to just swaddle one arm, but again, if he's not sleeping as well without it, I would stick with the swaddle for now.  Eventually he will stop startling and won't need it anymore.

  • Never heard of the Woombie, he is in a Halo Swaddle sack, which I thought would be hard to wiggle out of, but he manages! :)  I will check out the Woombie, thanks!  And I will also try leaving one arm out, maybe that will satisfy him enough to relax.
  • My daughter is 7 1/2 months and still swaddled at night.  We use a Halo sleep sack w/ the velcro that goes around her torso.  You can swaddle arms in or out but we have been doing it out for several months since she started rolling.  You may also want to try just a plain sleep sack.  They make them up to toddler size so it's worth a try!

  • At 3 months, couldn't you lie him on his stomach? As long as you've kept up with tummy-time and he can move his head by himself...?
