anemia

so at my last doc appt 2 weeks ago she told me my anemia level was 30 and to double up on my iron pills. since then i feel even worse its so hard to get thru the day without feeling like i am going to collapse. so when i went this past fri and told her about it and asked if we could maybe recheck it she said she didnt see the point and just add another iron pill. well no big deal except i cant poop as it is and they make my stomach feel yucky which sucks cause i still have issues every day with eating. do you think i am just being paranoid or insist she recheck it? i know it can drop lower than that so i dont know why she doesnt seem to care.

Re: anemia

  • Ferrous gluconate is easier on your stomach than other supplements. Vitamin C improves absorption. You could also try a liquid supplement like Floradix. https://www.floradix.net/ It's more absorbable and doesn't constipate.

  • I had low iron during my last pregnancy, but supplements rarely agree with me.  Taking it with orange juice did help, but I still wanted to do it more naturally this time.  I'm not a vegetarian, but neither do I eat much red meat. This pregnancy I eat a lot more spinach, peas, tofu, eggs with the yolk, beans (black beans especially) etc. and I have had much better iron levels, and the fiber in the spinach & beans help with the other issue as well!  I wouldn't just keep adding iron pills, but if you're determined to get your iron that way I'd insist on another blood draw.

  • I had the same issues with my iron pills. When I switched to a slow-release iron supplement (Slo Fe), I was golden.

  • Thanks everyone for the advice i appreciate it!
