Re: Questions about what type of twins you're having

  • Ask your MFM! At your genetics screening they will also tell you.
  • There are a couple way you can guess yourself. Sorry, I can't see the pic. This will be easier to tell in early u/s. Are the babies in separate "bubbles"? What I mean by that is do two separate black holes surround the babies or are they within the same black hole? The black hole is the gestastional sac. If they are in the same sac they are identicals and monochorion (share a placenta) Whether they share the same amniotic sac will be determined at later u/s as they can't alway determine the dividing membrane early on. If they are in different sacs they are likely di/di twins and probably fraternal, altho can be identical in rare cases.

  • pea-kays diagram shows it really well.  i am not sure where to find it though.
  • I agree with pp that per your u/s it looks like mono/di!

  • We knew at my first u/s at 10 weeks.  They should be able to tell you by now and it's best to determine it in the first trimester but it can be determined as early as the first u/s.  I'd request to see an MFM since they are really the experts if your OB can't determine it.  I looked at your pic and it's tricky... They have an obvious membrane between them and I think I can see what's called a "twin peak sign" or Lambda sign on one side but it's not super distinct like some I've seen.  However on the other side it looks more like a t-sign.  Here's what I'm talking about:  https://www.worldtttsawarenessday.org/pictures.php

  • I don't know what type of twins we are having, either. At our first two ultrasounds at 6 and 9 weeks you couldn't see the membrane separating the babies. Our doctor told us that sometimes it is hard to tell early on; sometimes you can tell right away and others not so much. She said the next best time to see if there is one or two membrane is between 16-20 weeks. So we have another ultrasound scheduled with an MFM at 18 weeks at the hospital, so it is a high tech machine. We are praying they at least see a thin membrane between the babies, so we aren't as high risk.

Here is our picture from our 9 week ultrasound:

  • I didn't know until they were 4 months old.  They had their own sacs/placentas so they were assumed to be fraternal.  We had them tested at 4 months old because they have same blood type and really look similar... they are ID.

  • I wonder if mine will have the same blood type and need to be tested.

I think it's so strange that so few ppl know about the possibility of di/di being ID. It's 25-30% chance from all of the stuff that ive read and ive read a ton!! lol.

It would be cool to have ID's and Not have the 'high risk' pregnancy issues =)

    either way, we're all blessed!

  • I only found out at my second u/s, which was at 13w. I only learned it was twins at my first u/s at 11w at which point , they referred me to the MFM. I agree with PP, ask the MFM. If you aren't seeing one, ask to.
  • I'm not 100% sure either, I just know that my boys are very clearly in two seperate sacs. There was a very thick membrane seperating them.

I keep seeing ya'll refer to MFM, but I have no idea what that stands for, or what one is. LOL. Can someone answer that quick question?

MFM is Maternal and Fetal Medicine. It's a branch of obstetrics that deals with high risk pregnancy. Technically the doctor is a perinatologist, but it's a lot shorter to type MFM. I would ask your ob if you will be referred to one at some point.

If your twins are in two distinct sacs then they are di/di, which is a lower risk pregnancy than mo/di or mo/mo.

Me too- we found out at 4 months they were identical even though they were di/di- people thought I was crazy for not knowing, but I needed to do a DNA test to be sure.

  • Is that a pediatric specialist? Because I go see a pediatric specialist Thursday for genetic testing
  • Yes, they are in a separate sac but there close like they have a line dividing them
  • No sorry that was the only picture I received
  • Thanks I will try googling it
  • Is a MFM a pediatric specialist? My doctor never referred me to anyone I've only seen him once since this pregnancy I don't think he has much knowledge of twins he treat me like I'm carrying a single baby when. Seen the nurse she mad me an appointment to go for genetic testing
  • Thanks I'm glad I'm not the only one I guess mines was a little harder to tell then others also
  • Wow that's amazing
  • Everyone says MFM is that a pediatric specialist? That's who. Have an appointment with other then that i don't have a clue who or what that mean

Thank you! My next appointment is next Tuesday, so I'll ask then. I've only got 5-8 weeks left to go (35 is the earliest they won't stop labor, and my OB won't let me go past 38 weeks) so I would assume they would have sent me to one already? But I'll bring it up and see what he says. Thanks!
