Random screams?

I live in Miami, in a nice neighborhood. However, Miami is the kind of city where you can have million dollar residences on one side of the street, cross that street and be in a cracked out ghetto. Literally. So, 2 blocks away the ghetto starts and with my balcony door open I can hear screams coming from that general direction. I'm pretty high up so I am going to get out my binoculars and see if I can't espy the screamer. It's just so creepy, making me feel nervous. And before you berate me for not calling the cops, they don't respond in certain neighborhoods after dark, so that's pointless.

Re: Random screams?

  • You have night vision binoculars???

Call the cops anyhow, at least you've done your part.

  • Wow, sounds like my Southern California neighborhood sometimes. I usually let a few screams/odd noises/fights/sexcapades go before calling. When the cops respond 2 hours later, I look like a crazy maniac. Sometimes I yell back.

Yes crazies, people can hear you. 6 am on a monday morning is not prime time to fight with your babymomma in the street.

  • Growing up in Memphis was much the same. I am so glad I moved to a quiet rural area. Bad things still happen, but at least it is not a daily part of our lives. I eventually want to go towards a more metro area, but I would like to stick to the rural outskirts rather than suburbs or actual city.

Don't get me wrong. The city uas it's perks. My mom actually recently right to the center of real city Memphis and loves it. But she also had a shootout right in her front yard a couple months ago and weekly breakins on her street. And she lives in a "nice" neighborhood.

Call me crazy, but I will gladly give up proximity to shopping centers and all the "happening scenes" to decrease the risk of harm to my family.
  • I do have some pretty nifty binocs, but no they aren't night vision. It turned out to be some kids messing around. Thank goodness no one getting hurt! It really was freaking me out tho. Since getting pregnant I have been feeling increasingly vulnerable and unexpected things just inspire the worst anxiety, especially when SO isn't home and I'm all alone. I am really looking forward to moving to a residential neighborhood after LO is born. It's funny, all our friends seem to be getting pregnant and moving to the same neighborhood, so I won't be lonely and LO will have lots of friends to grow up with. Plus my daughter will have her own room for when she comes to visit, and if circumstances make it feasible for her to live with us she will know she has a place in our home.
