Multiples

When did you find out?

I've been wondering this for a while, but now I'm pregnant so I'm really wondering.

If you have a non-complicated pregnancy, no risk factors, etc. and only have an US around the 20 week mark, is that when most people find out they are having multiples?  Or, are there signs that would lead your Dr. to believe you may be carrying more than one?

I know one mom who didn't find out until 20 weeks, but I can't imagine finding out that late!

Re: When did you find out?

  • I found out at 6 weeks because of bleeding so they did an internal ultrasound. If I didn't go to that appt then I would have found out around 10 weeks. Most first appts are around 810 weeks and they will usually do an internal ultrasound then. I can't imagine finding out at 20 weeks, that's a little far into the pregnancy.
  • We found out at 7 weeks due to bleeding which led to an ultrasound. Without the bleeding we would have likely found out at 12 weeks, which was when my first appointment was and by which time I was measuring 17 weeks and showing quite a bit and I imagine they would have done a dating ultrasound at that time. I couldn't imagine finding out so late!

  • I think I found out around 8 weeks. I wasn't expecting an ultrasound at that first appointment; in fact, I had been told in advance I wouldn't be getting one that day. So DH didn't even come with me that time. After doing a pelvic exam, my OB decided to do one after all. Not sure exactly why...perhaps my age (35), maybe I was measuring bigger, or maybe my description of severe morning sickness (or all of the above.)

  • I had an u/s at 7 weeks due to bleeding. I was so relieved when the tech found the baby and the heart beat. Then she said, "There are two."

  • Yep, we found out at 20 weeks. I didn't have any risk factors or weird symptoms. In fact I was sure we were having one baby. During my early appointments the doctor would find a heartbeat and that was it!

  • Yep, 18 weeks....quite a shock! No symptoms, problems, etc. Always heard a heartbeat and that was it.

  • because I was TTC for almost a year, and have a history of anxiety attacks, my doctor let me have an early u/s so I found out at exactly 7 weeks

  • We found out at 7 weeks, but there really were no signs of twins until I felt them moving. I was small as well. What makes you suspicious of twins?

  • My OB does a standard dating and viability u/s at 10 weeks, so that's when we found out.  I would have definitely suspected something if I had to wait until 20 weeks since I was measuring a few weeks ahead of a singleton.
  • I found out at 12 weeks at my first OB appointment when my doctor did a quick ultrasound

  • My OB always does a dating ultrasound around 8 weeks so that is when we found out. If she hasn't done that she probably would have noticed around 12 weeks when doing the doppler or feeling my uterus since I was already starting to measure ahead. By 16 weeks I was measuring 20 and by 20 weeks I was measuring 28. It would have been a little hard not to think something extra was going on in there.

I thought I was about 8 weeks when I went in but to do long cycles I was set back to 6 weeks 3 days when I found out. My doc knows I am an impatient a%^hole so I had an early one... ok really I am high risk, but he also knows that I'm an a%^hole Big Smile

Katie- is your doc going to monitor you closer or are you an "all clear" high risk pregnancy? I have some pervious health issues that make my doc watch me like a hawk.

Same here. I have been several different doctors with my 3 previous pregnancies as we have moved a lot, and every doc I have been to always does an ultrasound in the very beginning to check the dates, make sure everything is good.

  • I think many people have ultrasounds earlier than 20 weeks these days. My doc always does a 6 week & 12 week u/s. We didn't see twins at the 6 week (don't know how they missed it), but we saw twins at a 10 week elective u/s.

  • I found out at 20 weeks too. We saw a midwife and had no early complications or risk factors, so no standard ultrasounds until 20 weeks. It was quite a surprise - for some reason, I thought a person would know they were a "twin person," and not just randomly become pregnant with twins!
