Trouble TTC

Lap Question

For those who have had them, did your RE/surgeon talk to you in advance about the risk of developing surgery-related adhesions?  I've read that laps can cause adhesions, and couldn't they cause just as many fertility issues as endo, if I have it?  I have my lap scheduled in a few weeks and have a lengthy list of questions for my pre-op, so will ask about it then, but wanted to ask you all in the meantime if you discussed it with your doctors.

Re: Lap Question

  • Although my RE ran through the whole gamut of things that could go wrong in the surgery (total hysterectomy, etc), she reassured me that she anticipated no issues with my particular case (everyone's med hx and dx are different).  They have to throw out every scenario to protect their practice, and surgery is always a risk, but if your RE answers the questions to your satisfaction, I would not be too concerned about the laundry list of things that could happen.  If he/she doesn't answer all your questions to your satisfaction and you're not at peace with it, you may try other things first!

  • I hate to discourage you but the truth is I wasn't one of the lucky ones. My first lap cleared my endo but I needed the second one to clear the adhesions. My doctor tried to blame the adhesions on my endo but I knew better; I had no adhesions the first surgery. I also blame my first lap for the reason my egg supply is undetectable, but I can't know that for sure as it could've been caused by the endo itself. Looking back I wish I hadn't had the first surgery. My disease wasn't causing pain, as I had gone gluten free and that had relieved the pain already. I would've been better off doing IVF because at least I would've still had eggs and the endo would've been bypassed. I would say make sure they leave your ovaries alone during surgery. It's not worth the risk, even if you have endometriomas.
35yo, DH 40, 5 yrs TTTC. Normal HSG and SA. Challenge is low ovarian reserve (AMH=.16) due to moderate endo. Two laps, 2 IUIs with injectables, no baby. Trying first IVF cycle 4/13. Actively seeking egg donor.
  • Nope! We didn't discuss it.

Thank you all for your insight. This is what scares me, I have no pain to speak of and I'm worried that exploratory surgery may do more harm than good. My RE did mention IVF down the road as an option to nypass if it's there... I'm still really up in the air about it and may rethink a little this weekend.
