Changing nipple size

Have you had to change your LO's nipple? What signs did your LO show that made you do this?

My dd is 11 weeks and is ff. she eats 5 to 6 oz each feeding.
Lately, she turns her head away half way thru the feeding. I thought gas or being full or wanting to look around. She will turn her head away then back to the bottle drink a few more sips and do it again.
Now I'm wondering maybe the size of the nipple but if it wasn't coming out fast enough i dont think she would turn away from it?!?

Re: Changing nipple size

  • I think we changed from size 1 to size 2 around 3 months. He wasn't choking anymore and I could tell he wanted more to eat but was getting tired of sucking. All you can do is try it and see how it goes :)

  • My babysitter just told me yesterday that my DD is a distracted eater.  She's 14 weeks old.  The babysitter recommended us changing to a Level 2 nipple.  I'll be trying that next week to see if it helps.  She usually eats between 4-6 ounces, but now she loses interest around 3.

  • I've never changed nips from the first size.  When my DD was 16m and finishing up with the bottle she was still using the original nips size 1.  DS is nearly 1 and still on size 1 also.  There is usually no need to change.  IMO it's a marketing gimick.  There are only a few instances where changing is really needed.

ETA: just like the little holes in boobs don't change size ;-)

  • I changed my LO's nipples to size 2 when she was about 10 weeks, I noticed that even after she had napped (and I fed her right after her nap) she would fall asleep eating, and if she wasn't falling asleep, she was getting super pissed off by the end of the bottle (I think she was getting pissed it was taking so long to eat).

I've heard that if you go up to the next nipple size, and they are choking or coughing a lot (signs they are getting food to fast), then you should be fine. But it did take my LO a day or two to get used to the faster flow, she never coughed or choked, but at first was a very sloppy eater with them until she figured it out.

  • I am going through the exact same thing and my child care provider suggested changing the nipple size...however my son is already using size 2 and size 3 is supposed to be for 3 months plus  so I am uincertain.  I picked up the size 3 yesterday and I am going to give it a try.  I will let you know how it goes.
  • I have the EXACT same situation.
