Are all ring slings created equal?

Why is the Maya and other ring slings so expensive? Are they worth it? I see some other websites selling ring slings for much less.

Re: Are all ring slings created equal?

  • There are differences in quality of fabric, shoulder design, and you want to make sure that actual Sling Rings are used (especially a concern with etsy seller and other homemade slings).

That said, I bought a no-name ring sling used, and love it. It's two layers of cotton, has nice pockets on the tail, and works well for me. You don't have to spend $80 on a ring sling. Sleeping Baby Productions  is a well loved brand at a lower price point (start at $35 new).

  • I don't think that all 'anythings' are created equal. I've seen slings selling for $20 and for several hundred dollars. I made my own sling for maybe $10, all told. The fabrics can really influence the purchase price. An organic silk hand-dyed, double layered, two-toned sling is going to be far more expensive ($540 at Sakura Bloom) than a basic cotton, single layered, all-one-width sling ($35 at Maya Wrap). Does all that mean they will work any differently? Not really. Buy with the climate in mind, but basically they all have the same function.
  • I tried the Hava ? sling and hated it. It had padded rails and was very hard to adjust. I ended up returning it and getting a Sleeping Baby Productions ring sling and I love it. Huge difference!
  • Yes and no.  As mentioned, brands like sleeping baby productions are both quality and affordable.  There are however lots of "fly by night" makers out there that I wouldn't recommend because you have no way to know their quality - I'd look for a maker that is a BCIA member so you know they are following the new industry regulations.  I'd also avoid any sling that's just made of quilters cotton - they are cute but not comfortable!  Linen is a solid fabric choice that can usually be found cheaply.  Some cotton weaves - like what Maya wrap uses - are also good.  Buying used is another way to save.
