Baby Names

As seen on Facebook. Not what you think!

Edythe.

But not on a baby. It is the name of the oldest FB user. Edythe is 105 years old. Guess the erroneous Y thing started a long time ago.

Re: As seen on Facebook. Not what you think!

  • Funny!

I wonder if it's pronounced like the normal Edith. Or if it's more like:

Ee-Die-Th/Ee-Dithe. "Die" in the middle, not short "i".

  • It's actually listed on BTN as a variant of Edith. Not sure about that!

  • Somehow I don't mind it and when I first read it I got the "Olde English" feel from it rather than the "you-neek" feel if that makes sense?
  • I don't mind it either and I think it looks very pretty! It's just not the common Edith, and around here these days I don't think that Y would be received well if it was a suggestion for a new baby.
  • I don't like Edyth if it is pronounced the same as Edith. But I think Edythe if pronounced like Ee-Dithe (long i in the middle) is kind of a nice name in an old school English kind of way.

  • This was my great grandmother's name.  It was pronounced just like Edith.

eta: DH has a relative from that generation named Eloise, pronounced "ee-loyss" though... soooo.. pronunciation may very.
