Sleeping on chest

Lately DD will only fall asleep on my chest. I have to let her sleep there for 20 minutes or so before putting her in her crib or she'll wake up and fuss. I'm not sure if it's considered a good or bad thing. I know this has been posted about before, but I can't find those posts right now. What would you do?

Re: Sleeping on chest

  • I let DS sleep on my chest all the time while I'm watching TV. I don't think it's a problem because even though they're sleeping on their bellies, they're up against you and you're able to keep an eye on them. I just always make sure his face is turned to the side so he can breathe.

  • My lo did this during her first couple weeks and I loved it but because of everyone else I didn't want her to get "spoiled" so I would feel guilty and stress about getting her in her crib, now she's 10 weeks and absolutely hates laying on my chest and I miss it! It may be a little rough sometimes but just enjoy it! Cuddle her and smell er and kiss her because before you know it she won't want
    To let you!
  • DS did this and so does DD... this was the only way to get any sleep with DS... go to the attachment parenting board for good info on cosleeping and bed sharing

I <3 her sleeping there and dont believe its spoiling her in any way... you cant spoil babies

ETA: DS transitioned fairly smoothly to his crib by 5-6 months but was okay sleeping in various places (ie swing, PnP, crib) for short periods by 3-4 months... some babies just need the extra cuddles

  • I don't think it's a bad thing at all unless you are also asleep. After I nurse DS at night I often put him down by lying him on my chest and rubbing his back. I am always scared I am gonna fall asleep too!
  • I let DS fall asleep on my chest a lot. Nothing wrong with it in my opinion. I feel like it brings us closer. DS goes through stages where different things help her fall asleep so I don't believe this will be a habbit I have to break.

  • I agree with PP. I get a lot of advice, particularly from my oldschool Grandma, like don't spoil that baby, don't let her sleep in your bed unless you want her there till she's 5, etc. My girl is almost 9 weeks and almost always falls asleep on me after nursing... Morning, day, night, time of day doesn't seem to matter. Sometimes I'll doze off with her like that for an hour or more, sometimes I'll put her in the swing, RnP, crib, bed next to me, whatever. I remind myself how precious this time is. She will only be this little once!

Another thought is by having her sleep on me on her tummy and not always in the same spot on her back is we may be avoiding some flat head. Maybe?

  • DS would sleep on my chest all the time. In fact, it was the only way that he would sleep, typically. We also co-slept (not while he was on my chest) for 2 1/2 months and I was worried about creating a monster, but he went into his crib without any problems.

It's the same thing with DS2, and I'm not worried. Like a PP said, I make sure that he has his head turned to the side to breathe but otherwise, he's happy as a clam.

You can't spoil a baby in the first three months.  I'm a firm believer that this time is the "4th trimester" and it is our job to mimic the environment in the womb to make them as comfortable and secure as possible.

    Also agree with this entirely.

  • My son sleeps on my chest and he loves it! It's the only way I can get him to go back to sleep during the night. He slept from 4:00 to 7:30 on my chest and although its frowned upon, I fell asleep too. I love bonding with my son this way! There's gonna be a day when he's too big to do that so I'm gonna enjoy it while I can!

this is totally how we are getting by, too. I have been pretty sore from my csection and its hard to get up and down out of bed, so dd and I end up sleeping on the couch together with her on my chest from about 2-6 am. DH takes the 9p -2a timeframe and tries to at least get her to sleep in her swing for a little bit.
