Babies: 0 - 3 Months

gurgling/ congested sounding

My lo is 4 weeks old and she makes this wet congested sound after she eats. It sounds like you or I would sound if we had a cough stuck in our throat with every breath. She also constantly clears her throat while she's eating. I asked the nurse today who made it sound like it's perfectly normal and told me to keep her upright for 30 min after eating. Is this common knowledge keeping upright and do all babies gurgle like this?

Re: gurgling/ congested sounding

  • I called my doctor stressed about this quite a few times and they just waved it off, said to keep her upright and to get saline nose drops that sometimes it's her nose is stuffed which makes it some congested...I use the drops spaced from her eating though becaus if it's too close in time it makes her spit up...I'm not much help huh? Lol 3 am rambles...

  • It could never flux. Does she spit up a lot? Babies with reflux are suppose to be held upright 20 to 30 min after feeding. My 4 week old commonly sounds congested.
  • We wer told to hold upright because of reflux. If it happening after she eats then maybe some of the milk is coming up and that's why the gurgling. Our baby is also congested. Our Pedi said this is common for winter babies and she said not to worry about it unless we notice she is pulling off the bottle with problems breathing.

  • Thanks. I thought maybe reflux. She doesn't spit up ever though.

  • My baby has this too, I want to see more responses!  I do have a fast let down but it continues after feeding, what do we do about it?  It is like she is struggling to breathe but it does not seem to bug her as much as it does me :)
