When to put LO in the crib for the night

Hello everyone!  DH keeps asking me how old DS should be before we put him in his crib for the night.  I know it's a matter of personal preference, but I was wondering what your thoughts were.  He's only 2 weeks old, so definitely not too soon, but just wanted to get a general consensus.

Thanks!

  • D moved over around four months. I'd intended to keep him in our room until six months, but dh got sick and nobody was sleeping. Absolutely no regrets about making the switch then, we've never looked back.

  • We moved DS to his crib in his nursery at 8wks old.  He was a very noisy sleeper and was keeping DH and I up and us moving around in our sleep was waking him up.  He STTN for the first time about 2wks later!

  • We are in transition now.  M goes in his crib at night and typically stays there, but if he is being extra fussy (read, I have to get up more than I like).  I just bring him back to our room and put him in the bassinet so that I can just shove the paci in him mouth without getting out of bed, lol.  I'm not too concerned about him being in the crib all night for now and we just do what's easiest for now.  Honestly you have to do what seems best for you.  My first was in a bassinet with us for almost 6 months, my second was in a crib full time by 6 weeks (she slept through the night, but was a loud sleeper so we just moved her), and with this one we are taking it night by night.

  • His room is on a whole other floor so that complicates things. I don't feel like going up and down the stairs a billion times. Currently he sleeps in his room during the day and in our room at night. Our plan is to gradually transition to always sleeping upstairs by the time I return from leave at 12 weeks.

  • DD has always slept on her back, but in the PnP in our room. We were going to transition at 6 mo, but the upper level PnP weight limit is 15 lbs, so we'll be transitioning as soon as we get back from our trip, at about 5mo.

We don't want to use the lower PnP level at night because our chihuahua is on dieretics and he sometimes pees on things. Super fun.

    My beautiful Ella/ToT arrived 10/10/12.
  • DD moved into her crib in her own room at 4 months old.  Until then she was in the pack and play in our room.  But our room is on the third floor and even with central air it gets really hot in late spring/summer, so we moved her to her own room on the second floor once it started getting too hot.  I think it was the perfect time for us to move her, but I think each baby is very different.

  • DS is 2.5 months and we started letting him sleep the first half of the night in his crib and when DH left for work in the morning 6 am I brought him into our room in the PnP I am more comfortable him being in there when it's just us two then lately he's been waking up screaming and I read they feel alone so he's back in our room. I'm going to try again once he hits 3 months. He started sleeping longer so maybe it's time? He will be in his room no longer than 4 months.

  • We're going to start trying tonight at three months!  Pray for me gals, I don't know if my nerves will let me - plus, my DH works nights, so it's not like it bothers him if DS is sleeping in his PnP beside me, but yeah - he's getting to big for it ;P

  • I think it is really a personal decision for you and your DH.  I warned DH that DD1 would be in our room for at least 6m bc the nursery was on the other side of the house and on a different floor.  I ended up wanting to move her at 3m bc she was a loud sleeper and would wake me up since I'm a light sleeper.  She was also a light sleeper so sometimes if DH snored or we coughed or something it would wake her up.  I was very nervous at first but thank goodness for the Snuza and video monitor :)

  • We had her in a PnP in our room at first and moved her into her room when she started STTN around 4 months. I figured as long as I was waking up during the night to feed her, that it'd be easier for me if she was closer to us. We didn't have any issues transitioning, although it definitely bummed me out.

  • Depends on the kid. DS1 moved at 8 weeks because he STTN before you hate me that was after 4 hours of colic screaming every night. DS2 is still in our room since he wakes every 3 hours.

  • Did you know that the AAP suggests 6-12 months? We transitioned DD at 11.5 months. DH wanted to move her within a few weeks but she was still waking up to eat so often that we just kept her in our room in her co-sleeper. It worked for us and crib transition was no trouble at all.

  • No set answer.

Give it a go, see if it works. If it doesnt, wait a week or two and. Try it again.

DD never went into the crib. DS is 5m and is still in the rnp.

  • I started putting Ava in her crib at 2.5 months. It took a few nights for her to get used to it, but she has been STTN since 5 weeks, so it wasn't as bad as it could have been... If I had it to do over, she would have slept in there since the day we brought her home. We never had her in our room anyway because we didn't have room for the PNP in there. She just slept in the PNP in the living room, which isn't very far away from the nursery anyway. We have the Angel Care monitors with the movement pads.

  • He went in the first night home from the hospital.  All was well until when he was 2w old and suddenly anything flat was clearly on fire.  Turns out, he had colic and reflux.  So, into the Rock 'n Play he went.  We moved him back to the crib at around 5 months.  It took a few nights to get him used to it and I had to go back to tight swaddling. The crib was still in our room at this point.  We got him used to the crib again and then moved  him to his own room about a month later.

I think the real answer is, "when you're comfortable doing it."  If you want him in your room and the crib won't fit in there, then that factors into the decision.  If it fits in there and you want him in there, then do it when it works for you.

  • We put her in her crib her first night home from the hospital, she slept in it for a couple weeks before it became evil and she would scream if she was anywhere near it and then she slept with us until she was 6MO and then back into the crib. Her crib was in our room though until she was 9MO.
