Baby Names

DH and I don't agree on girls name.

He likes Ashley.

I like Olivia.

We both like Caitlin, but not as much as we like our own first choice.

Our oldest likes Charlotte. (she loves Good Luck Charlie)

Middle name would most likely be Anna (after my grandmother) Big Sisters are Emily and Abigail.

  • My suggestion is to take all 3 girls names-- his favorite, your favorite and your compromise name to the hospital and decide when she is born.  This is exactly what my H and I did.

FWIW, we wound up going with his favorite (which I also liked, and now love) because it's attached to my beautiful DD.

    Good Luck!

I really like that idea.  We have talked about not picking a name until the day a few times.  We could get a good look at her first...lol Thanks!

  • I'd go with Cailtin.

Ashley feels dated. Charlotte and Olivia are too popular for me.

  • Going through the same thing here.  Most likely we will both compromise with the name we both "like".  I wish we both LOVED the same name.  It's so frustrating.
  • My SO picked Ashley, so that is what our dd name is going to be. To be honest, I had to get used to it, as it wasn't my favorite. I LOVE it now. Her name is going to be Ashley Ann-Marie

    LOL...definitely nms.

    DH actually suggested Emigail.

And he was serious.  It was immediately vetoed. I appreciated what he was trying to do, but its stupid.

  • I like your choice MUCH better than his. Ashley feels so dated and boring to me. Olivia is not totally my style as it is so very popular but still a pretty name. I also like it better than Caitlin.

  • My personal favorite from your list is Charlotte. I love how Emily, Abigail, and Charlotte all feel very "vintage" together (Emily and Charlotte are 19th century names, Abigail is more of an 18th century name). One caveat: I like Charlotte Anna, but I've heard people consider "Charlotte Anne" before, and I've always thought it sounded an awful lot like "charlatan" -- a quack or a fake. I don't quite have this reaction to Charlotte Anna, but I wanted to point it out. Do you and your husband like Charlotte at all?

My second favorite is Olivia -- I like how Emily, Abigail, and Olivia all start with a different vowel. Olivia is also an 18th century name, so she fits with the vintagey feel of the sisters' names.

Even though it's not my favorite, the fact that Caitlin is both your and your husband's second choice is a really good argument for using Caitlin. If you each don't like each other's #1 name, but your #2 names happen to correspond, you still both end up with a name you really like (even if it wasn't your #1 originally). She is both your child after all, so it's good if you both can like her name. :)

Here is how NOT to make the decision: My husband and I found ourselves in this exact same situation three years ago. (I liked Julius, he liked Elliot, and Wesley was #2 on both our lists. The main reason we were hesitant about using Wesley was that it didn't sound good with the family middle we had chosen.) We went to the hospital with all three names, figuring we'd make the decision once we met the baby. Well, when he was born, he didn't look like ANY of the three names. He looked more like a Malcolm. So much for that idea! The baby was rushed to the NICU, and before I'd gotten to spend any time with him, my husband came back and announced he thought the baby looked most like an Elliot. After a long labor, C-section, and NICU visit, I didn't care so much about the name any more, so I consented. We called him Elliot for 24 hours while we were in the hospital, and finally on the day we were supposed to leave, I broke down in tears saying I didn't think Elliot fit. I had taken to calling him "Baby Ellie" since I wanted a cute nickname for him, and I knew that there was no way "Ellie" was going to work on a boy. I wanted to take the baby home unnamed and make the decision later. My husband insisted that I choose one right away, and so I picked Julius (my favorite). At that point my husband consented since he was glad that I had finally made a decision. I honestly think if I had taken the baby home unnamed and had more time to think it over, he would have ended up being a Wesley instead -- I did love the fact that it was both of our second choice. But Julius definitely fits our son (and I don't think Elliot would have at all).

  • I wanted Carys and my husband wanted Keira. I didnt mind Keira so I went with it. After she was born I was having buyers remorse and was wishing I didnt choose Keira. Then the other day I said I wish we named her Carys over Keira and he was like yeah! Carys sounds good! I think I like that better then Keira. I was like are you getting me!? So stick with your guns...they dont know what they like lol. But of all the choices I like Caitlin best.

  • Emily, Abigail, and Charlotte. I'm not one for letting siblings name siblings, but in this case I like her pic best. :)

  • I definitely want their names to go well together too.

I think Olivia goes best with them.

DH is hoping this convo wont matter anyway..he's hoping for a boy. But he would be in love with another little girl just like his first 2. We'll see.

  • Do what we did take all your three top picks and put them in a hat fold them of course lol since you have narrowed them down to only both of your favorites and have one o your kids pull it out and that a way it is fair I loved Elijah Collins he loved Hunter Collins and we both loved Gabriel and Ian so I folded them and he pulled it out we are having a little Gabriel Collins Lawler in late may early June
