Goopy Eye

Gracie's eye was a little goopy last night before bed, and really goopy this morning when we got up. I called the pediatrician but they were not able to see her and told me to head right to the ER. They way they said it made me feel like her eye was going to fall out if I didn't get there ASAP!

ER doc says it's just a clogged duct/VIral Conjuntivitis and gave me a script for Ophthalmic Erythemyacin (sp?) to give her IF it goops up more than once an hour while she's awake.

Poor Gracie just had her first ER experience :( I'm just glad it wasn't anything serious!

Re: Goopy Eye

  • I am sorry you had to go to the ER. especially during flu season, not fun. My LO had a clogged duct too and dr. just said put breastmilk in it often and wipe it (closed) with a warm cloth several times a day to help it clear itself out. I think h was around 5 weeks before it finally cleared up and went away. Good luck!

    They had you take your infant to the ER during an hellacious flu season bc of a goopy eye??! nbsp;WTF?Rhys had a bit of a goopy right eye, too. nbsp;We figured out that it was most likely a clogged duct. nbsp;I just wipe any gunk away with a warm damp cotton ball, and squirt some breast milk in it a few times a day. nbsp;Our pedi confirmed that this is the right course of action and said that most clogged ducts resolve themselves in a few weeks. His already seems better.nbsp;

    All of this. I can't believe they had you go to the ER in flu season for this. I havn't had this problem with DS but DD had a goopy eye when she was first born and we just did warm washcloth and breast milk and it cleared up just fine.

  • Yea, I was a little annoyed that they sent me to the ER when she could easily be exposed to more crap :( I used antibacterial sanitizer after I touched anything and didn't let her come into contact with anything other than the doctor and nurse!

  • I'm an optometrist- shocked they sent you to the ER!  If you can't get in to your pediatrician, call your local eye doctor- we are more than happy to help! :)
  • Wow that's crazy! My son is battling a clogged tear duct now. We took him to the doc and they said the same thing. Massage his eye every other diaper change and use drops if needed. I'm intrigued about the breast milk thing. I'm gonna try that!! My cousins daughter had one and she said it cleared up at 4 months. I'm so ready for his to clear up!
  • That is strange that they sent you to the ER for a blocked tear duct. We were told to just wipe it with water and use your pinky finger to massage around the nose/eye area.
