BTDT bf-ing moms - bottles

I apologize if this question has been asked, I don't remember seeing it on here though.

I have my registry almost done, but I keep going back and forth on what type of bottles to register for.  I know, ultimately, LO will be the one dictating what bottles we use but I still want to have a few on my registry to try out.  I am planning on breastfeeding, but the baby WILL have to do bottles when I go back to work and they start daycare.

Any BTDT bf-ing moms with bottle brand recommendations?  I have heard good things about Dr Browns wide neck and Avent natural - anyone agree or disagree?

  • The only ones M really liked were the Playtex Premium Nurser Drop-Ins.

  • Don't buy anything expensive or invest in anything special just yet. All we had on hand were the Medela ones that came with my pump and we got two nipples and two shells for the Playtex drop ins system. DD liked both, no issues. You can always go out and try more expensive bottle systems if your baby has trouble with nipples.

  • We started with Nuk bottles and then we started using Playtex Drop-Ins.  I loved the drop-ins, I found it was the best way to eliminate air in the bottle.  Plus super easy clean up!

  • The majority of my BTDT friends have suggested Dr. Brown's and thats what I'm planning to start out with.

This. We registered for Tommee Tippee's and DD hated them. The bottle that she eventually settled on was the Playtex VentAire (not the wide ones). I would recommend trying a bottle that has as few parts as possible - makes cleaning much easier.

  • I plan on BF'ing too.  For bottles I registered for both Avent and Playtex drop-ins.

  • I used the Medela that came with the pump for the first couple months, but DS2 started having trouble with the nipple. Now we use Nuk or glass Evenflo. The only complaint I have with the Nuk, is that you have to use a cap under the nipple to keep it from leaking, which I always forget to take off until DS2 starts freaking out.

  • I have BFed both my girls each for a year apiece. They both started taking bottles when I returned to work. I HIGHLY recommend dropins! Easy to clean which is a huge time saver you have as a new mom you need all the time you can get!

  • We used the Dr Browns wide flow for breastfed babies.  We only got a small pack to begin with to make sure she liked them ok.

  • I used Nuk with my previous and will for this one as well.

I forgot about the cap!  Good point.

  • The Dr. Brown bottles have a lot of pieces, so they might be slightly more hassle to clean. Back in the day with DS, I liked using glass bottles. They were easy to clean and sterilize, and warm up. Also, unlike acrylic/plastic, there's less concern about leeching if you store or heat formula/breastmilk in them. This round, I think we're going with the Lifefactory ones. I use a Lifefactory bottle to tote around water during the day, and I like the shape and the cover on it.

I cannot recommend these enough. Long story short, DD had bad latching issues, so I EPed for the first 5 weeks.  I swear these bottles helped with a smooth transition back to the breast. I love them.

  • We didn't use many bottles, but when we did we used the Playtex Drop Ins.  Mainly because I got a Playtex pump and it came with some.  She took them with no issues, so we didn't try anything else.

Honestly, I'd get a few different kinds (not too expensive) and see which one your baby prefers, if he/she has a preference, and go from there.

  • I used the glass Dr. browns. They allegedly keep more nutrients in breast milk and my son had reflux son it decreased that as well. I used the glass ones, which are more expensive, because I am not a big plastic fan as plastic leaches chemicals.

  • We just used the bottles that came with my Medela pump.  We also received some Avent and Dr. Brown's bottles (that were not on my registry) in my shower wishing well.

I was super glad I never invested in any bottles, because DD never took one, despite trying those three kinds.  Sad

  • Thank you for the suggestions ladies!  I have more research to do...

I think my ultimate game plan will be to register for 2, maybe 3, different kinds of bottles.  When it comes time, I'll just open up one small package to wash & use with the baby to see if LO likes them.  If not, try the next brand/etc and then return the type (remaining unopened packages) they don't like to the store.  That might be bad, but I feel like people enjoy buying bottles off the registry so I want to have a decent amount on there.

I think my ultimate game plan will be to register for 2, maybe 3, different kinds of bottles. When it comes time, I'll just open up one small package to wash amp; use with the baby to see if LO likes them. If not, try the next brand/etc and then return the type remaining unopened packages they don't like to the store. That might be bad, but I feel like people enjoy buying bottles off the registry so I want to have a decent amount on there.

I had zero bottles on my registry and received zero bottles at my shower. No one asked where the bottles were. Don't worry about what people expect to see on your registry; worry about what you NEED.

Again, I think it's a waste to invest in different kinds of bottles before you know what your baby will need, and it just creates more work for you later with all the returning/exchanging. But I that's your preferred method, go for it. You may end up having to do the work anyway if you have a picky baby!

FWIW, I spent a total of maybe 15 bucks on the Playtex drop ins. Two slow flow nipples, two shells, and a pack of 50 liners. If I ha gone back to work, I certainly would've needed more. And we did eventually need the 8oz set and faster flow nipples. But overall, super affordable and super easy bottle system. :]

  • I BF and then EP'd when I went back to work.  I really liked the Medela freezer bottles for storing my pump stash and then Dr. Brown's for feeding (DD had reflux).  We'll use the same for DS since I saved everything!
  • I know quite of few have suggested the Playtex Drop Ins, but I just wanted to second, third and forth that emotion. ;)

My DD had a terrible time adjusting to a bottle. We tried everything - Dr. Brown's, Breast flow, Avent, the Medela bottles that came with my pump, and Born Free just to mention a few. When she was about 3 months, I stayed out of the house the whole day one day and she just refused to eat for my DH. The Playtex Drop Ins were the only ones she was "ok" with in the end.

If you want to register for bottles, maybe just register for the single bottles and not the gift sets. If you have friends with babies maybe you can borrow a bottle or two to test out the brand before you buy more.

Hopefully this little dude won't be so picky... and hopefully your LO won't be either.

  • We used the nurser drop ins for a little while then switched to dr browns.

  • I used Birn free, the Medela bottles didn't work, and I hated the tommee Tippee. I picked born free because the parts are interchangeable with their sipping cups
  • DS had major reflux from the get go. We tried about 5 brands and settled on dr browns. I wouldn't have started there tho, because of te cleaning of so many parts. Also, by the time we really started bottles, we were feeding from the 8oz bottles so the little ones went to waste. Other friends have really liked tommy tippee, born free and drop ins. I'm hoping this time we won't be stuck with dr browns again.
