BF Poop Problem: any theories?

DD is BF and everything was totally fine until just after 6 weeks. Normal, mustardy-yellow stools. Then the weekend before last, she was fussier than normal and didn't poop much. That Sunday night, she had two big, greenish, weird-smelling poops. No more frequent than usual, but definitely different and she wasn't eating quite as well. Called pedi and they said it was likely a virus and should clear up in a week. Weird poops continued all week and got more mucus-y. She also had a tiny bit of blood in the stool Monday am. Took her in on Monday and the nurse practioner said she thinks it's just normal stool; BF stools can have a range of colors, etc. It's now dark greenish and kind of mucus-y but haven't seen blood again.

DD is totally fine otherwise. No fever, doesn't seem uncomfortable, except some fussiness around feedings which could easily be totally normal. No one else has been sick. I haven't changed anything with my diet.

Have you experienced anything like this??? I still am not sure this is "normal." My other kids never had poop like this. It's dark greenish now (it's gotten more green over the last 10 days) and kind of mucus-y. She goes for her 2 month check up on the 12th and I will ask about it again then, but since she is acting totally fine and they already said it's "Normal" not sure what I can do in the meantime.

Re: BF Poop Problem: any theories?

  • She hasn't had any nasal congestion? We've been fighting a cold in our house and all the mucus she's been swallowing has ended up in her diaper. DD had green poo for two weeks after she turned 1 month, but it was a hindmilk/foremilk issue- I started keeping her on one side longer and it cleared up. Since then, she may have an occasional green poo but it comes and goes.

  • My pediatrician said that blood in the stool is often a sign of a food allergy.
  • DD is about 7 weeks old now.  Starting right around 6 weeks she went from having multiple (4-6) mustard yellow BMs each day to having one (maybe two) massive, greenish BMs.  She's even skipped a few days and had no BMs.  Her stool isn't mucusy at all.  According to Baby 411 it's normal for BMs to slow down around 6 weeks and as long as your LO is having loose stools at least once or twice a week that's okay.  I would however be concerned about the mucus and blood.

  • My son was a few months older when this happened. His stools got really mucus-y all of the sudden. His pediatrician has his stool tested and found traces of blood in it. She diagnosed him with a milk and soy protein sensitivity. I continued to BF him, but cut milk and soy out of my diet. He grew out of it around 9 months and I slowly added milk and soy back into my diet. He drinks WCM and eats dairy and soy with no problems at all now.

  • Same exact pattern mine took. I posted about it recently too. I have gone dairy free to see if that helps.
  • My LO became really fussy and had green poop after her 6 week growth spurt. I have overactive letdown and the extra feeding caused a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance. I saw the LC to rule out latch issues because she chokes a lot the first minute or so. Now I express the first minute to slow the letdown and only give one side per feeding, and it went back to yellow after a few days. I still see occasional green poops, but I was told its only an issue if its always green or LO stops gaining weight.
