Supply question re: BF

My 11 day old DD has been sleeping for long stretches the past two nights (5 and 6 hours respectively). I've been told that as long as she is back to her birth weight and is gaining, that I can let her sleep. However, I'm worried about my supply. Will it decrease if I'm not pumping every 3 hours at night? During the day, I'm waking her up and feeding her every 2-3 hours. I've also been pumping 2-3 times a day.  Thanks!

Re: Supply question re: BF

  • ds has been sleeping 5 hour stretches at night for a while (i'm not sure how long, everything blurrs together lol)

but I haven't had any supply issues because of it. if your worried then I'd say pump every 3-4 hours for a few night just to make sure its not a fluke? but I honestly would just count my blessings and take those extra hours of precious sleep

  • I would still wake up and pump, at least for a little while.

  • Your supply will regulate itself within a few days, though you will probably wake up very full. Count your blessings and get some sleep!

  • Your body is so smart, you don't have to worry. If you chose to breatfeed 1x a day, that's all your body would make, if you chose to BF all day, then your body would handle that as well.

If your LO is sleeping well, don't wake her up and don't worry about pumping (unless you want to build up a freezer stash) if your supply decreases and she starts waking up more wanting to eat, your body would adjust pretty quickly.
