Belly Button...Infection or normal?

My sons belly button is just now falling off but underneath there is a yellowish mucus around the actual belly button skin. Is this normal? My doctor said to bring him in to the office but I have been reading that this is normal? Anyone else experience this?

Re: Belly Button...Infection or normal?

  • I think it's normal... just continue to clean it with alcohol swabs and that part will also crust up and fall off in time.  Both of my girls have had similar things to what you describe.  With our first, the pediatrician ended up cauterizing it with silver nitrate at her 2-month appointment.  Hopefully DD#2's heals on its own.

  • My DD had the same and the pedi wanted me to bring her in. I was using alcohol on a qtip to clean it. I don't think it was infected, but they just wanted to see it and they cauterized it so it would fall off. Can't hurt to have it looked at.

  • That's what my DD's looked like too.  My ped said to cover it with gauze (no tape or band-aids) until it scabbed over.  I would just tuck the bottom part of the gauze in her diaper, and it would stay put.  It took a day or so for it to fall off completely and stop oozing...but it did look pretty nasty at first.

  • We had that too.  It looked icky for a while but we kept cleaning it with alcohol...doctor said it was fine and we did not have to bring DD in.
