Need Suggestions transitioning to crib? Help!

Okay. My twins have slept at night in their RnPs, in our room, since birth. We have a very specific bedtime routine that works pretty good. (White noise and swaddled only at night). Bedtime is around 7:30 and they sleep till about 4:30-5:30am. Then feed and go back down till 7:30-8am. The past two weeks we've been trying to have them taking naps in their cribs and it has been going okay. My son is starting to get a bit big for the RnPs and they are both getting fussy, fidgety and breaking out of their swaddles. I think they are ready to go to the crib OR I could put them each in a pack n play in our room as well. I am SO NERVOUS to do this. I don't know why. I'm just scarred its going to be a horrible transition. Should I keep swaddling them when I transition? Should I pack n play it or crib it?  What did y'all do?  Did you have one go down good and one that would scream?  If so, did you separate them until they got the sleep schedule back down?  I have SO many questions in my head. Please give me suggestions that worked for y'all. I need to hear stories!!! :) Thanks!!!!  Are they giving me signs that they need to be out of their swaddles and RnPs?  Just want to make sure I'm doing the right thing.

Re: Need Suggestions transitioning to crib? Help!

  • I would vote for going straight to the crib. Otherwise you have to transition them to sleeping in the PNP, and then transition again to the crib in the future. Less pain to go straight to the crib.

We had to transition one of my boys from the RNP to his crib unprepared, because one night we found him on his belly hanging out of the RNP because he'd gotten so worked up and squirmy. I thought it would be a disaster but after a tougher night or two he's been absolutely fine. We left him swaddled in the crib, and now are transitioning out of the swaddles since he's rolling over. My other baby is still swaddled in his RNP, but now he's starting to get squirmy, so his time is coming.

It sounds like yours are giving you signs that they're ready to be out of both. Are they rolling yet? If not, I would suggest transitioning to the crib while swaddled. If they are rolling, I would say start leaving an arm out while swaddled in the RNP. Work up to two arms out if you can, but if not they should be fine with an arm out while in the crib (my little man mostly sleeps with one arm swaddled in the crib and does great). The crib transition is so scary, but babies usually get the hang of it after a couple days.

Our boys still don't nap in their cribs. They nap in the PNP/swing, though I need to start moving them to their cribs since they're getting more disturbed by noises downstairs while napping.

  • We are in the process of making this transition as well.  My boys are getting so long that it's time to get use to the cribs.  I agree with the pp that you should go straight to cribs, no need for two transitions.

For us it's been bitter sweet.  One baby did great starting the first night.  My other son won't have it.  I have to rock him to sleep, put him down and hope he stays down.  He often takes as many as 3 tries to get down (which is similar to how he is about sleeping/napping in general), so not too concerning.  However, he used to be the one to sleep the longer stretch and since being in the crib he now wakes every hour.  DH and I usually give up by 11 and put him back in the the RnP so that we can get some sleep.  Each night he has gone a little longer in the crib - I'm talking minutes, but I figure it's something and eventually he'll get there.

We do swaddle, but won't once they start rolling over, which could be soon.  DH is not traveling this month, which is why I decided to start when we did. I'm hoping that if we are consistent, that one night he'll just get it and do it.   Good luck.

Also, when one cries it does not wake up the other baby.

  • I never used rnp. But when I transitioned from pnp to crib I had brought each of them to sit in their crib for a few minutes the days leading up to transition. Then I put them down for a nap together in crib as they had been together in pnp.then the night they had gotten their 4mo shots we put them down in crib as shots always had made them sleep good.

  • Thanks for the responses. I'm going to start tonight and just stay consistent. I appreciate all the advice.

They do not roll from back to tummy yet, so ill keep swaddling and try one arm out tonight. They typically kick out of the bottom as well (we have the Miracle Wraps), but we'll just see how distracting that is and if we have to...we'll just use the sleep sacks we have. Here's to a crazy coup,e weeks...... Pray for me!!!!! :)

  • I would leave both arms swaddled if that is what you have been doing.  If they work it out themselves, fine.  Just do one transition at a time, that worked really well for us!  Give it at least a couple nights or a week fully swaddled in the crib then work on breaking the swaddle.  The first night our boys woke up once and after that went right back to their normal schedule!  Don't be scared!  There's always the rolled up towel trick or the magic sleep suit if the going gets rough!

  • I find sleep and naps with twins so hard and frustrating sometimes! I had to keep my boys swaddled in the crib for awhile when we transitioned from swings, pack n play, etc. for naps. Slowly I started to leave one arm out, then the other, now they are not swaddled for nap time.

I had to separate them for about a month for naps because they were waking each other up, but my house is so small and I could not get anything done because one was in the nursery and the other in my bedroom, so I decided to just put them together for naps and have them get used to each other. It was a tough 2 weeks and very short naps because they woke each other up, but we are starting to get longer and better naps and they are able to sleep through each other crying about 90% of the time.

They still wear a sleep sack at night for warmth, but were swaddled for a really long time! Hope it goes well and everyone gets some sleep soon!
