anyone skip the bottle and go straight to sippy cup?

At my doctor's appt on Monday, I brought up the fact that my son does not like the bottle and that I wanted to wean from breastfeeding around 6 months (give or take).

She then said that she would recommend still trying to give the occasional bottle now so that I can get a break here and there (with either breastmilk or formula), but if I wanted to fully transistion to formula to wait until he can take it from a sippy cup instead. That way he doesn't have to be weaned from a bottle.

Has anyone done this? Did it work? I had never heard of this or thought of it.

DS is 4 months now.

Re: anyone skip the bottle and go straight to sippy cup?

  • We're already giving DD bm in a sippy cup mostly (when she doesn't get it straight from the source, which is usually). She takes more that way than the bottle and she is happier about it.

DS wouldnt' take a bottle so we started him on sippy cups around 5 months. Easy peasy. Some sippy cups are made for 4+, just get one of those.

In particular the way we started with DS since he hadn't taken a bottle at all in months was to get a NUK soft spout first sippy and cut between the holes so that the milk would basically pour out. Once he figured out he was getting milk that way, he was fine with sucking on the super easy sippy cups.

  • Yes, I was able to skip the bottle with DD2.  She was NOT having it and I was getting increasingly frustrated trying a zillion different bottles.  I went back to work when she was a bit older though; she was 8 months.  The month prior to my return to work we tried a bunch of different cups and we finally wound up with a playtex straw cup that was marked for much older children.  She did well with it!  on the plus side, I never had to wean her from the bottle.

  • I second the Nuk soft spouts. I hadn't given DS1 BM in a bottle in months so when we transitioned to WCM at about 11 months it was in one of those (but we had been giving water since 6m in the sippy just for practice). If I had to use formula we would have done the same as we did with the water.
  • We didn't skip the bottle, but our transition to sippy cup has been fine.  She's bottle/sippy cup pretty evenly split now.  She was a really mellow baby though and never preferred one bottle over another.  we've used 4 different brands since she's been around and she hasn't had any issues with any of them.  For sippy cups, we bough the Tommee Tippee ones that are 4mo+.  They're on clearance at Target right now for $2.48 by my house.

  • DD hates the bottle.  She took it without too much trouble until she was about 3 months old, then nothing doing.  So I got this sippy cup: https://www.amazon.com/Philips-Classic-Polypropylene-Bottle-Trainer/dp/B003ZUXBBC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1360165873&sr=8-1&keywords=avent+sippy+cup

She's not great at it yet, but we work on it most days and she's better with it than the bottle, to the point that if I had to leave her through a feeding I'd be more confident with the sippy cup than the bottle.  I think it works better for her because a) she wants to hold it and the handles make that easier than with the bottle and b) she has to clamp down to get milk, unlike the bottle which just leaks into her mouth and freaks her out.

So--short answer--I don't think you even need to wait if you want to try it now! DD was not quite 4 months when we first tried the sippy cup.

  • We sorta did. DS was never a fan of bottles. He took a sippy cup no problem though starting at around 5 months. So, I just EBFed & then gave water in sippy cups. Then at 12 months, as I started to wean, I gave WCM in sippies.

  • We will be doing something like this. E has been given 3 bottles thus far. We haven't really practiced and thus he isn't very good at it. We aren't going to bother with the bottle. Eventually we will just go straight to the sippy cup.
