LO got her first tooth roughly 2 weeks ago and the other bottom one is barely poking out. She was drooling like crazy at first but has since slowed down a bit. She is also constantly blowing raspberries or chewing on her fingers. Both of her cheeks and around her chin and mouth are now bright red (looks a lot like a bad diaper rash) all the time. I've asked the pediatrician about it, but at her last apt on Monday, she treated both of us so terribly, I will be changing doctors and I now question all advice given by her. She advised me to put Vaseline on her cheeks, but I'm worried she will ingest it since she has her hands on her face constantly. Any other ladies dealing with this?
Re: VERY red cheeks from teething?
No teeth yet, but DS' cheeks and chin are constantly chapped between all the drooling and getting food on his face and the cold weather.
I have no idea whether Vaseline is safe to ingest or not -- I remember my mom smearing it all over my face when I was a kid, to protect from cold weather. But there are other similar products you could try. There's un-Petroleum by Alba Botanica, or Weleda Weather Protection Cream. I have something called "petroleum free jelly" made by a local company that is mostly sunflower oil. Also, there are people on the CD board who swear by coconut oil for rash protection.
I've been trying to be good about keeping DS' cheeks and chin moisturized with whatever I have around, and it seems to help. I keep a tube on the table where we do most of our nursing, and a tube in the diaper bag so it's always convenient.
This.
My DD always had very red cheeks and even more red after nursing but no teeth yet
I use this. I don't put it on all the time but she had some chapped lips.. she licked a little only while putting it on but that was it.
