NPR: If you take out books from the library

Ok, so our library system in town is all linked up via computer (I think it works like this in most places now).  If I want a book, I can look it up in the online catalog, put a hold on it and have it delivered to whichever library in the network I want.  Well, the last 3 books I've put a hold on have come up "unavailable" when I check my account.  I can see that they're not checked out.  What's the deal?  I don't know why, but this is really bugging me.  I want to read these books!!!

The only thing that I could think of is that they are lost.  That is a pain in the a** for you though.
