Bumps in diaper area - looks almost like chicken pox but only in groin

DS has had some red bumps in his groin area - above his penis, but way below his belly button, where the diaper would be.  It almost looks like chicken pox but it's only in that area and he's had the vaccine (not that he couldn't still get it, but his chances are less).

He's only had them a couple of days and I've been putting diaper cream on them, but they aren't going away.  They are not yeast bumps - I know what a yeast rash looks like.

Anyone know what it is?  How to get rid of it?

  • Heat rash?  Keep it dry and cool.  Cornstarch powder can help, as can daily bathing.

  • My daughter fought off a horrible, unexplained diaper rash for about 6 months. We tried different things like antibiotics, creams, switching diapers etc and finally were able to see a dermatologist. The derm suggested using a large amount of Aquafor during every diaper change and that was what finally cleared it up. I would suggest maybe trying that and if it doesn't go away get into the pedi to see what they have to say.

  • Yeast rash? I'd go to the doctor to check if it doesn't go away soon.

If it's bumpy it could definitely be yeast.  Get some Lotramin (or if you're cheap like me, the generic stuff) and try that, it works wonders on yeast rashes.

  • It may be chicken pox.  My daughter got chicken pox (from her vaccine) and it started out only in her diaper area for almost a week.  It spread a little bit, on the thighs and trunk area, after the first 5 or 6 days.

  • DD has the same thing it sounds like. We tried every thing on it. I didn't think it was yeast either because it didn't look like any yeast rash she'd ever had, but after using everything else we finally tried nystatin and it went away in a couple of days. Hers seemed itchy, since she was constantly trying to take off her diaper and scratch.

  • Hand, Foot & Mouth sometimes only presents as a rash on the butt. Both times DD got it, that was the primary symptom.
