Transition to homo

Did u what till 12m to transition to milk. If so how did u do it?

Re: Transition to homo

  • With DD1 I switched from formula to milk a week before she turned one.  Did it all at once, and went from bottle to sippy at the same time.  She was a piece of cake.  I doubt it'll be that easy this time around :)

  • This is my first and we are waiting until 12 months. Our pedi told us we could do it 2 different ways.. One was to slowly ween them off mixing formula/milk (making less formula then pouring the milk in. Not using the milk as water) or we could just go straight into milk and not try and ween him off. He doesn't care what he has to drink as long as its something so I'm not worried he won't drink it. I am more worried if I give him a straight up milk sippy it won't sit well with his stomach. So I think for that reason I will mix until I know his stomach is doing okay with the dairy. My brother was lactose sensitive until he was 3 or 4 so I want to make sure he won't be. Although, I don't think he will be. But you never know!

  • We are doing the gradual with mixing until it is all whole milk. We are also starting before 12mo. She'll be 11mo on the 20th and will probably start the change right about then. 12mo isn't a magical age like we, myself included, think it is. A lot of doctors say 12mo but it means right around that age, give or take a few weeks.

I want DD weaned from nursing by 12mo so that is why we are doing it this way.

  • Thanks for ur input.. My dd will be 11 months in a wk i was thinking of transitioning her slowly by two oz mixed with formula per wk until 8oz is reached
  • I can't be the only person who thought this wasn't about milk at first, can I? Hee hee.

But in all seriousness, OP, I think I am going to slowly transition in milk starting around 11 mo. I am down to three nursing sessions per day and pulling the lunch feeding is the next step in our process. Instead of mixing, im just going to gradually completely replace meal by Meal.

I'm just on the fence about what kind of milk to introduce. My mother, being a vegan, has me scared about introducing WCM, but I still need to do my own research on whether or not I agree with her.

My first thought was "what in the hell?" - but then again, I teach middle school and am afraid I'm starting to internalize some of their ways.

Ditto above PPs on weaning, and on the sippy. DS has a straw sippy that we use for water, but I can't imagine the PITA it will be to clean milk out of the straw (we have the Zoli Bot), so we're going to use a regular sippy for milk.

This sounds so much like us. I just cut DD's 10:30am nursing. She now gets a snack and a cup then instead. The same week I start to introduce whole milk, I'll drop the late afternoon nursing so it will just be first thing in the morning and right before bed. So far so good.

And no, I was kinds confused when I saw the subject line as well. :)

I thought the same thing. WIth DD1, I ran out of formula and gave her milk. Pedi. said we would be fine to do the same, even if DD2 was a couple weeks away from her first birthday. There were no issues with DD1, but DD2 has mild asthma and eczema, so I am worried she will also have allergies. Although her formula is milk based, I'm still a little wary, so I may mix at first. I'll be glad to get away from the super expensive formula!!

  • Lmao, i never even realized my title did not sound right..
I think im going to start dd this friday on milk. She is down to three bottles a day , breakfest, lunch, bed. She shows no interest in her 3pm bottle. She has a straw sippy but im going to start that when we r straight milk.
Like pp i really want to get away from this expensive formula.. If she cant tolerate i guess formula it is :

These are a godsend for straw cups!  My oldest only used straw cups and I had NO idea how to clean the straws so I was on Amazon looking to buy replacement straws when I happened upon them!

  • Tip on cleaning straws.. Pipe cleaners, my mom used those to clean out the staws in the rubbermaid juice boxes. I also have a bottle drying rack that comes with a straw holder to hold straws upright to dry .
  • I also didn't think this was about milk :)

DS would not transition to milk.  He absolutely refused to take milk.  We kept giving him formula until 15 months.  At that point, our pedi said to just quit cold turkey.  He went on a milk strike for about a month.  We upped his fat in other areas (lots of whole milk yogurt) and he eventually caved.  Now he loves it.  Just wanted to give us a hard time.

    I'm hoping DD is easier.

Thanks! Just ordered them - and reflecting on what I would have done over the last 10+ months without Amazon.

  • I'm so glad someone asked this. I have no clue when or what to do. Is anyone also still getting up early for their Lo's first bottle of the day? I am still getting up at 5 am to nurse my son and put him back to bed.
