October 2011 Moms

I am worried something is wrong with my baby but no one will listen.

Hey ladies, my 15 month old has been sick for going on a month now. It started with a cold and she seemed to recover, then suddenly she stoped sleeping, eating, drinking and was just fussy. She ended up having a double ear infection and was given amoxicillin. Exactally a week after that she spiked a high temp, was puking and just lifeless. Took her to the er and she tested postive for strep and ears were infected.(while on amoxicillin) She was put on omnicef, the next day she was a little better but then the next day she spiked a fever again (104) was puking and just layed on me crying. So back to the doctor and she was given 2 shots of rocephin. She quickly improved and the next day doctor said her throat and ears were clear! She had one more good day and then out of no where she began screaming in pain. She would not let us comfort her and she would roll all over the floor screaming and clawing at the carpet. She would reach for us and then arch backwards when we pick her up. This went on for over a hour and she just stoped. She slept for a few hours that night and then scraemed off and on the rest of the night. I have had her back to the er or doctor for 4 days now, and they look at me like I am nuts. Sshe checks out fine and even has moments where she plays and acts normal. Nights are the worst, she sleeps from 8 -12 and then wakes and screams non stop. She will be alright for a while after givng motrin but is back to screaming when It wears off.

Re: I am worried something is wrong with my baby but no one will listen.

  • I am at my witts end and dont know what else to do for her. The doctors say that there isnt anything wrong with her, but I know she is in pain. I have never seen her act this way, not from teething and not even when she was at her sickest with strep and ear infection. I dont even know what else I expect the doctors to do or check! I am just so worried and I have this un easy feeling that something is wrong. Maybe a side effect of the rocephin? Doctor says no but the screaming did not start untill after she was given the shot!

  • Do you see a regular pediatrician.  I'm sure it is hard for an ER Dr to piece all of this together.  If nobody is listening find a different Dr!

Also has she been teething.  Those molars can really do a number.  She could be teething and be struck down with sickness.  Poor little girl!

yeah she has a normally awsome ped, and even when we take her to the er she sees one of the doctors thats in practice with her doctor. She has got her molars in and was fussy but nonthing like this. To be fair her doctor has checked everything even blood work and has no explanation.

  • The only thing you can do is be her advocate.  Keep going to different doctors until one of them listens to you.

I'm sorry your LO is going through this, and you too.  I hope you get answers soon.

  • DD1 has a terrible cough/cold, double ear infections, and she's cutting molars. She's miserable and is pretty much inconsolable which makes the rest of our house miserable. Good luck!!
  • If you think it is more than teething + sickness, then try a different doctor. I would highly recommend looking into the doctors at your local children's hospital. It might be a drive for you, but if you get a specialist who is the top in their field they may give you some answers. I know that my mom had to do that with my younger brother. He was born with asthma and she didn't get results that helped him until she took him to The Children's hosptial in philly. ( we live outside of philly.)

    Best of luck to you.

  • I agree about taking her to the children's hospital.  If you take her into the ER and say she is inconsolable, even if there is nothing wrong they can usually pinpoint a problem or tell you "Sorry, she's teething but you know what? Let's do this to make it better?"

  • I would take her back in. Like PP said, you have to be her advocate. Have they checked for UTI? What about her clothes new soaps at all? Are any of her nails ingrown? Is she constipated?

I know it sucks. DS has had a constant cough for 14 months. We've been to several specialists and nothin seems to be helping. I just keep taking him and keep a notebook of meds/reactions and when the coughing is really bad.

The only thing that really consoled DS he also had chronic double ear infections, tubes in November was a shower. The water on his back soothed him. Then we would do jammies and I'd hold him and he would be so pathetic and lethargic. It's heartbreaking.

  • I never thought about taking her to the childrens hospitail. Do they have a er like other hospitails? She isn't constipated but is having yucky poops (antibotic side affects) if her belly was hurting from antibotics would motrin help that? She aslo puked twice today for no known reason. I have been loading her up on yougart as much as she is willing to eat. Right now she is naping and has been down 4 hours, she has woke up 3 times screaming though.

If she has loose bowel movements and is vomiting, lay off the dairy and go back to basics.   BRAT diet is what you should be feeding. (Bananas, rice, applesauce (no sugar), toast)

That being said, with all of those compounded symptoms, I'd take her to a children's hospital ASAP and insist someone listen.  Yes, children's hospitals have ERs.  They are full service hospitals but only for children and usually, only the best-of-the-best doctors work them.

4 hour naps are long and, if regular, could be another clue to something.  I'd be concerned if DD slept for that long for a nap.  Then again, your LO likely isn't getting quality sleep with all of these issues going on.

Motrin won't help a tummy ache.  BRAT diet may

Is it possible that she could have food allergies.  Try simple, bland basic foods and get her into a doctor.

Motrin is a general pain reliever -- I don't see why it wouldn't help with stomach cramps (not nausea, but cramps from intestinal spasms).

The Motrin might actually be causing stomach discomfort. It is often suggested that it is taken with food to alleviate stomach issues. Motrin is also notorious for causing ulcers so I would be careful with using that especially if you think it could be GI related. Maybe switch to Tylenol for awhile and see if that helps.

  • She has never had a issue with foods before so i dont really think it is food allergies. Also she has had the amoxicillin and omnicef many times before with no problem, only thing shes had diffrent has been the rocephin shots. Like I said before she got the shot (even when her temp was 104, with strep and double ear infection) she was just fussy and crying normal. The day after she got the shot was when the non stop screaming began. Another strange symptom is she seems really thirsty, she asks for her bottle like every 10 minutes but only takes a sip.same at night. She has woke from her nap in a good mood, so I will see how she does. Thanks ladies so much, its nice to be able to voice my concerns and not be made feel like I am over reacting. My whole family thinks she is spoiled and seeking attention :(
  • You know your daughter better than anyone else. Don't let anyone feel like you are crazy. I know my mom had a doctor tell her that my brother was spoiled. No, all the medications that he was on for his asthma made him feel like poo and he couldn't sleep! It took going to the Children's hospital to finally get him on meds that worked for him but also didn't have all these terrible side effects!

    Hang in there!
