Bottle Weaning and Nighttime Feedings

Hi everyone,

My son is 11 months old and I read that it was time to start weaning him from the bottle and stop nighttime feedings. Does anyone have any suggestions or tips on weaning, we started a sippy cup several months ago and he's getting better with it. Do we give him the same ounces of milk in the cup or start giving more solids?

Any advice on nighttime feedings will help as well.

 Thanks. :)

Re: Bottle Weaning and Nighttime Feedings

  • Our pedi suggested we start moving off the bottle to a cup at 10 months.  By elimatinating a bottle a week, starting with mid-day feedings.  We don't give her a bottle at night time now, but we were told leave that one for last (assuming we did give it).  We thought it would take longer cause she wasn't good a turning them up to drink but within that first week she figured it out.  We had to switch the formula from the cup back into the bottle a few times (because she wouldn't drink ANY from a cup), so it probably took 2 weeks to elimate that first feeding, but only a week for the rest.

We elimatinated the nighttime bottle around 9 1/2 months, we were told to start cutting down the ounces (one ounce at a time) or start adding more water instead of formula (one ounce at a time).  We got home late one night, she ate dinner at normal time (6-6:30) and fell asleep in the car.  We decided not to wake her up when we got home (8), her normal bedtime is 8.  She slept through the night that night (and most nights since), so we just stopped cold turkey.

We were told that there should be no reduction the number of ounces given, they still get primary nutrition from the formula.  Solids are "for practice".
