Potty training

I'm not ready to start this yet, but just want some ideas. What's better, a seat that you can just put on the regular toilet or a potty chair? I don't want to have to hold him or help him balance on the regular toilet but I don't really have room for a potty chair either. Also, with boys, do you teach them to sit facing outward or facing the toilet since they'll ultimately stand up to pee? Obviously if he's pooping he'll face outward so maybe I just answered my own question. Any thoughts?

Re: Potty training

  • I have no advice about the inward vs outward but I will be getting DD one of the seats to put on the toilet & a step stool. Honestly, the thought of cleaning out a potty chair kind of skeeves me out.

  • First DS is currently wearing the jammies in your siggy.

Second, mom said to make them sit facing forward.

Third,  I found that the potty chair was a good thing to have to start with when we were training DD.  Some kids are afraid of the toilet or potty so when she was 18 months old we started sitting her on it in front of the TV or in her room or wherever. She got used to it.  I also started bring her into the bathroom with me at that age.

If you do decide to start early, I strongly suggest that you don't force the issue.  If after the first day you have no success, stop and wait a few months before you try again.

  • I first taught Oliver to sit onb the toilet (facing out) because we tried the standing up and peeing thing and it was a mess.Ick!

After he got the gist of that down I had MH show him how to pee standing up.  they did the whole box of cheerios thing.  (Most potty chairs have a pee guard for boys.

My kids trained later so we just used the toilet seat insert, we always had a stool pushed up against the toilet so their feet wouldn't dangle.  I will not start training Violet until either she want's to on her own, or she is2.5-3 years old.  I really hate potty training.Angry

  • PTing won't start here for at least another year. We will have him sit forward, straddling the toilet is just gross. We used a potty set with DD and now she uses the insert and step stool, we will reuse the frog potty with DS -- I think it is easier for them because it is their size.

  • I potty trained two girls and two boys, both with potty chairs and on the toilet. When they used the toilet, I had them sit backwards and hold the tank. They felt more comfortable holding on to it. They were all two, and the boys didn't start standing to pee until they were four....and even then, they would spray everywhere. I wanted to make sure they would go on the toilet without a toddler potty seat that you set on it, because when in public we wouldn't have a potty chair or a cover on the actual toilet....I didn't want them to be scared of going on a plain toilet.

  • We use/used both. Lo has a potty seat in her room for convenience but we also have the things that go on the regular toilet seat. With E we taught him to pee sitting down. He just started peeing standing up recently because now he's tall enough lol.
  • You all made some good points and have some good ideas. Thanks!!

  • So funny you brought this up bc this has been a topic of conversation in our house for about a week. DS has been telling us when we need to change his daiper, he runs up says diaper and goes into his room. Changing sometimes still sucks, he gets angry bc he has to sit still. I think we are still a ways out from potty training but I think we will start with a potty chair and then move onto the regular toilet sitting down. My nephew is 4yo and he is still sitting.

Yes!! This is why I brought it up. DS will start grabbing at himself and run to get a diaper, so I thought I may try just putting him on the potty and see what he does. I'm sure it will be a total fail, but whatever!
