Morning Sickness

For those that delt with morning sickness, what did you do to help? If you ended up needing a prescrioption med, did you have to actually go in and see your doc or did you just tell them you need something & they called it in?

  • I was really sick with DD, but this time around has been worse and so much harder.  I feel for you  :(

I talked to my dr when I had an appointment, but I am sure they will call something in for you (Zofran and/or phenergan).  You can try unisom and B6 to see if that helps.  Some people say sucking on sour candy helps (like jolly ranchers, lemon heads).  They also have those preggie pops - I have seen them at Motherhood Maternity, Whole Foods and BRU.  You can try sea bands, the little wrist bands for sea sickness that you can get at the drug store.

Nothing really helped me but hopefully you will find something that gives you relief.

ETA: this time my dr also recommended taking Zantac twice a day to help with the throwing up (in addition to Zofran, phenergan and unisom).

  • I went in and saw my Dr. and   I ended up being transferred to the hospital next door to be pumped with IV's.  It was really bad.

    Here was my M/S regimen:

Puke in the morning and get it over with

Take a Zofran and eat something

Never ever have a empty stomach, constantly graze because once you are hungry it is too late.

Then at night a unisom and a B6.  I really think the Unisom helped the most.   You may want to just take a 1/2 of Unisom before 12 weeks.

BTW  I'm not a Dr. I'd follow your dr.s advice,

I was on Zofran for the past two PG. I just suffered unknowingly with Oliver and I puked just about everyday until they all were born.  This last PG was the only one that I took the Unisom and B6 combo.  I did try motion sickness bracelets, Fail.  Preggo Pops, Fail.  I also read a book about protein and the link to MS so I would try to make sure I was eating protein, I didn't see any results.

    Good Luck!

I second this.  I think the unisom really helped me (and still does) the next morning.

  • Don't ever be hungry.  With DD I puked for the whole pregnancy without knowing this.

With DS I learned the constantly eat method.  It helped.  One thing that really actually helped that was non medicinal was gingersnap cookies.  I was working a trade show when I was pregnant with DS and I was miserable.  A brit working a booth across from us went to the UK candy shoppe booth that was at the same show and bought me a package of gingersnaps and told me that it was the only thing his wife could eat when she was pregnant.

    They worked better than crackers.

  • Zofran is the only thing that saved me. I had pretty bad morning sickness for 5 months with DD. I had to vomit the moment my eyes opened in the morning and it just kept going all day long until I got on zofran. plain Bagels and cherry slurpees did seem to help the nausea some.

I happened to be seeing my doctor that day so  I asked for a prescription then but they would have just called it in for me.

  • Oh, and a warning...zofran= constipation for me. So make sure you drink as much water as you can, eat some extra fiber if possible and take stool softener.

Also, for me, zofran didn;t stop the nausea...it just stopped the vomiting. The nausea I dealt with just with with the normal means of crackers, bagels, gingerale, and cherry slurpees.

Good luck to you! Remember...it will pass eventually!

    Isn't Unisom a sleep aid?

  • I have heard that if you keep some crackers next to the bed and eat one or two before you even get out of bed it can help prevent the nausea from starting. I also drank ginger ale and ate ginger candies. The thought of the ginger candy now turns my stomach though.

yes, but it was originally made for nausea.  When they realized it made people sleepy, they then started marketing it for a sleeping aid.   Just take it at night before bed.

In Canada they will give you:

Doxylamine succinate/pyridoxine HCI (Diclectin?), a combination of vitamin B6 and an antihistamine called doxylamine (otherwise known as Unisom!)

Both times I just called up and he called something in for me. He started me off on a low dosage and each trimester changed me to something different. With S I was sick the entire pregnancy with G I was sick up until 15 weeks. Brushing my teeth after I ate a little something vs brushing as soon as i got up, eating small portions every couple of hours helped me a lot. I also drank peppermint tea and ate peppermint puff candy.

I totally forgot about peppermint tea !

I'm hoping some of these things help. Eating as soon as I get up is not an option because I need to take my thyroid meds 1st thing in the morning and cannot eat for 30 min Confused

  • I took zofran during both my pregnancies. I also ate whatever sounded good for breakfast.... I ate cool ranch Doritos for breakfast for about 30 weeks with DD1... I also took Zantac, and tried to drink plenty of water. I kept hard candy in the cup holder in my car because I got carsick. That's how I knew I was pregnant the first time.
  • It sounds counterintuitive but I found always having a snack nearby helped. For me, not letting my blood sugar drop too much kept the morning sickness from getting too bad.

Before I did anything in the morning, I had a glass of juice. I sucked lemon drops or jolly ranchers on my commute. I had small snacks all day long. Most things were sour or carb-y, I had a huge meat and protien aversion.

  • I threw up almost my entire pregnancy. I went to my dr and she gave me Zofran, but I would still be nauseous(though usually I didn't puke still while on it) and it made me sleepy. I took b6 and unisom in the evenings and it really helped, but again also made me sleepy. Peppermint tea and saltines in  morning sometimes took the edge off.

I would try the Zofran, I know women it's worked wonders for.
