October 2011 Moms

Am I the only one with a LO who refuses to walk?

It's not that she doesn't have the capability. She walks just fine if I hold her hands. And she cruises the furniture. She just has no desire to walk because she can crawl like a speed demon! She did stand the other day not holding onto anything, but then she realized she wasn't holding onto the coffee table and quickly grabbed onto it.

Am I the only one without a walker? She just turned 15 months (Halloween baby). I know that she will in time and that there is physically nothing wrong with her, but I also don't know what else I can do to encourage her to walk. We hold her hands and walk, we have toys she can walk behind, but she isn't super interested in them.

Any suggestions?

  • Rocco is exactly the same. I think he'll be walking soon enough. Pedi said not to worry until 18 months since he is walking while holding hands.

  • Has she ever walked independently? Pedi said that at least a few solo steps were a 15m milestone. But I realize there seems to be a good degree of variation for what's considered a milestone and when by pedi.

  • R will be 16 months on Thursday, and he still hasn't walked independently. He'll do it while holding hands, and he'll cruise the furniture, but he is a really fast crawler and seems content with that. Pedi isn't concerned until 18 months. It's good to hear he isn't the only one though!

  • Gator was a 10/30 baby and she was walking at 11mo. Everyone in SO's family walked at 9mo so they considered her a late bloomer. Ha! Anyway, when I worked at a daycare in the 12 to 18 month room....we had a few kids that didn't walk until between 15 to 18 months. Nothing was wrong with them, they just took a little longer. But holy cow, once they took off...there was no stopping them! They went from walking to running within a few weeks. Whereas Gator has been taking steps since 10mo, full blown walking at 11mo, and now at 15mo....she isn't running.

It kind of reminded me of the kids that were so quiet and didn't talk in my daycare class. They just one day started talking and it went from nothing, to 2 to 3 word sentences in a week. No babbling or anything....just full on words. It was nuts!

  • Glad to hear that I am not the only one. DD will walk if I hold her hands and cruise the furniture, but she just doesn't trust walking without holding onto something. She is pretty steady when we do walk holding her hands and she barely holds onto the furniture, but I can't convince her that she can do it on her own. And she crawls pretty quickly so I think there just isn't a burning desire to walk.
