Vent: Sick of people coming to work sick!!!

I don't know if I technically belong here as my LO was only a few weeks early, but he did have IUGR and is still only in the 3rd percentile for weight.  At any rate, I still worry alot about his health.  And he has not been able to breastfeed due to small size (when he was born too small to latch on my nipples), GERD and a milk protein allergy...so he has no immune system.  One bad illness could land him in the hospital...and, on top of that, our deductible on our insurance is like $5k so if he does end up in the hospital, that means we are footing the bill at least until we get to 5 grand.

At any rate, I am so sick of people coming to work sick. Here, in Houston, we have a nora-virus outbreak, a flu outbreak, an RSV outbreak and apparently also a bunch of cases of strept (sp?) throat (at least in my circle of acquintances).  Twice in the past week I have heard someone talk about how sick they were feeling.  Today, it was the guy who comes to our office to water our plants.  I shut the door to my office and when he started to come in I told him, "I have a little one at home so if you are sick, don't come in."  He came in anyway and then tried to act like he was fine...I had just heard him 5 minutes earlier telling my paralegal how he had been throwing up and having diarhea and felt terrible...and his kids had been like that the entire weekend!  Why are you at work? Why are you going office to office spreading your illness?  We can water our own darn plants if you are that bad off!!!

DH and I have not taken LO out of the house in about a month.  We don't even go out to eat anymore unless we have someone to watch LO.  We take turns going to the grocery store/Wal-Mart and I will literally change clothes and shower before holding LO after being in those places or being at the gym.  Grrr...

Sorry for my vent. I just needed to get it out and I knew yall would understand and not tell me that I am being paranoid.

  • Amen. Id say something to the office manager about him coming in when you told him not to. That's a real issue.

  • That's very frustrating.  I am a nurse so I work with sick people all the time so it does worry me that I might pass something to my babies.  Fortunately they have never had more than a couple minor colds, nothing yet this year even.  It sounds like you are doing all the right things to protect him.  I was also going tosuggest changing clothes before holding him, not wearing your outside shoes in the house, tons of hand washing and sanitizing at home and at work, disinfecting surfaces in your office etc.

  • Thanks for all of the suggestions!  And for letting me rant.  I always shower after the gym and usually do change clothes when I get home.

  • gah!  This is my biggest pet peeve.

I also think it is super selfish when people knowingly send their kids to daycare or school sick.
