XP Results of my appointment today

Mobile bumping

I am completely sneaking this post in while I'm at work but I figured since this is what I emailed my BFF I could take the time to copy and paste!

Good news is that IVF with the screening isn't going to give us any substantially, or any at all, better chance at having a live birth than our continuing to try on our own.

Bad news is that this is because while my egg quantity is good the quality is so poor

parenthesis

which I guess then is called low ovarian reserve even though in this case it's quality

end parenthesis

that he basically thinks the chances of going through the retrieval process and finding that there are not enough good eggs to transfer is a very strong possibility. In other words enough of a possibility that it outweighs the chance that we could end up with a successful live birth as a result of all of that.

He said if we just kept trying on our own that we would have about a 40 percent chance of having a baby within 3 years.

So it's very, very unlikely given all the info and all the results, but in the end the IVF wouldn't give us any advantage. If I am lucky enough to someday have another child it may very likely be that I will go through one or more miscarriage before that happens. Which honestly is what I expected to hear given my age.

There was a lot more info he gave me regarding the MTHFR mutation and possible uterine adnoydosis.

Which is actually very possible and very possibly a big part of the picture as to why I've had so many losses. But we can't know 100 percent unless they did a hysterectomy and there's nothing they can do about it anyway. This is something that may have developed since the time I had my son versus something that I also had at the time I had him.

Plan ahead is that we will continue to try on our own and

One, start progesterone earlier
Two, add additional prescription for folic acid
Three, add over the counter DHEA and Four, baby aspirin in the second half of my cycle.

Maybe one of those things will help but he has no specific evidence to say that it will.

While sad I also feel kind of relieved. I was so expecting and so worried that the best chance other than donor egg was to go through IVF with the screening. But now since that's not going to improve our chances for my situation given my age, which btw just three years does make a huge impact, I don't have to worry about deciding whether or not to do that. Or having any future regrets that maybe I would have improved my chances.

Well I would love to give you all kinds of goodies for reading but I can't! But lots and lots of thanks and hugs for reading!

  • I'm sorry the news wasn't better. I think you have a good action plan. How old are you? I'm almost 39. I have low ovarian reserve, quantity and they think quality too.
    Hugs.

  • I'm 39, 40 in May. I'm really saddened by all of this but at the same time I'm trying to look at the positives as much as possible.

Really, it could be a worse situation for me. And 40 percent over 3 years is still better than zero percent. And there's nothing ELSE wrong thank heavens.

So we'll keep trying. And hope that if we have more losses that they continue to be on the very early side. Until we just can't do it anymore. And right now I'm just not quite ready to give up yet.

    Thanks so much again KK.

  • I'm new on this board, but just wanted to say I'm sorry it wasn't better news, and it sounds like you are looking at it in a positive way (that you are relieved you know, and won't have to worry about future regrets).  I am 41 and suspect that my egg quality is not great either.  I've had two unexplained miscarriages and one trisomy 4, plus my age doesn't help.  I think, like you, I would rather know and be as informed as possible about my options.  40% chance sounds fairly promising.  I really hope it happens for you!

    Me: 42. DH: 46.

    1st Pregnancy: MC, 11/19/00.

    2nd Pregnancy: DS born 04/10/06.

    3rd Pregnancy: CP, 03/11.

4th Pregnancy: MMC, D&C 11/30/11, Genetic testing revealed Trisomy 4.

5th Pregnancy: Ectopic, 2 doses of Methotrexate unsuccessful, surgery 4/10/12, right tube removed.

Tried Letrozole January 2013-July 2013 (including 2 IUIs), all BFN.  After 2 1/2 years of trying for child #2, decided to "give up" after July cycle, based on AMA.

August 16, 2013:  BFP our first month of "not trying!"  Still in shock.  Beta #1 (14dpo): 183.  Beta #2 (17dpo):  611.  Ultrasound 8/30/13: baby measured 6 weeks, 1 day, heart rate of 118 bpm!
Ultrasound 9/13/13:  8 weeks, heart rate of 176!
    Baby is due 4/26/14

  • I'm sorry it wasn't better news, but like you said, at least you now know that moving on to IVF wouldn't help. Now you don't have to make that decision and wonder "what if."

I wish you the best of luck on your journey and hope your new plan is exactly what you needed.

    Hugs!
