Babies: 6 - 9 Months

XP: Going back to sleep napping suggestions

Hi All, I'm not on here often, but could really use some advice from other mamas who may have dealt with this...

My 6 month old son is napping two - three times consistently every day. Because I try to get his older brother (an active 2 year old) out of the house most mornings, many times DS2's morning naps are in the carseat. After lunch I put them both down - DS1 generally sleeps for 2 hours, which he needs, but DS2 tends to wake up after about 30 minutes. The thing is, he NEEDS to go back to sleep. It is clear he hasn't had enough rest - but I'm having SO MUCH trouble getting him to fall back to sleep!

I'm fine with CIO...to a point. He's been getting so worked up, he'll start to hyperventilate - which I can't let go. So, like today, here we are...a moody, clearly tired baby and a worn out (feeling a bit like a failure) mama.

 Any advice?

  • I will be watching this post, because I am having the exact same issue!  Not the hyperventilating, though.  Today at the 30 minute mark, I just put him in bed with me, and we both napped for 2 more hours!  But that's not always an option of course.  Good luck.

  • The only sleep training book I've read from cover to cover is Weissbluth's. I don't follow it word for word, but he says that you should leave the baby in the crib for at least an hour at nap time, whether they wake up or not. My son tends to have a short nap every few days and I will leave him until within 10 minutes of his next feeding. Sometimes he falls back asleep for a few minutes, sometimes more. The idea though is that they are learning the length of nap time and also that they will be less active in their cribs, so the time is still more restful than if they were out and about.

    Short naps suck!
