I just asked this last week, too. Both pedi and online resources recommend cool mist - less bacteria build-up and safer for kids if they accidentally touch it when they get older.
I purchased a $30 Vicks cool mist at Target and came home to read the reviews. By far, the animal styled Crane humidifiers were being raved about. I'm going to return mine today and get a Crane. Crane's don't have filters that you have to dry out, which is nice. My pedi said to dry out the humidifier each day to prevent mildew, as well.
We need one because DS has been waking up with a dry sounding nose. I've also used saline drops (about 2 in each nostril) and then suction him, which has been working!
